Just curious how many MacNNer's are gym fanatics. I never worked out much in my younger years but now at 47 I'm very consistent with it. I do it mostly to keep the fat off and for the overall health benefits. I can thank my partner who has been an avid gym-goer since his early 20's for getting me into the routine.

My current routine is 4-days a week (Mon-Tues-Thu-Fri). 60-75 mins of pretty intense cardio along with some weights.

I work out between 5 and 6 days a week. Most of that time is outside running, but I use the gym so I can shower and not stink my co workers out of the office when I return

As the temperature drops below 32 degrees here in the next month or two, I'll move my running from outside to inside, but I'll put that off as long as possible.

Running 6 miles outside is fun, spending almost an hour on a treadmill with little to no visual stimulation is torture

I workout 5 days a week at home. Waste of money to go to a gym, for me.

Here in the DR, the gym isn't very expensive. I think we pay about $50/mo for the 2 of us. The gym is large with a complete set of circuit machines and free weights.

My only complaint is the lack of air conditioning. Sometimes it's excruciatingly hot/humid in the gym... I keep trying to convince myself it makes the workout that much better.

I play badminton twice a week (two to three hours each time), and I go running whenever I can find the time and mood at the same time (which usually works out to be about once a week), but I won’t, on principle, set foot in a gym. I hate gyms. They’re the work of the Devil.

About 9 months ago, my minimal exercise and lousy eating weren't doing my body (and my BP and my pant size) any good.

Started biking about 8-10 miles/day and then going to the gym to work out for about 45min- 1hr. I started doing this 4-5 days a week.

I haven't felt this good in a long, long time. I go at night, so there's no one in there to bother me. Hopefully II'll be able to do something to make up for the bike riding during the winter months.

After going through a lot of health stuff I am finally stable enough now to exercise. I am way deconditioned and way out of shape. I love riding my bike, but now the weather is cold! I am going to check into gym memberships for the winter, but I am afraid I won't be able to afford them as Social Security Disability is my only source of income. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do?

Do you have health insurance, bstone? You could request to see a Dietician and he or she can point you to some great resources for nutrition and exercise at home.

Yeah, I have Medicare Part A and Part B and also have a Medi-Gap supplemental insurance policy. Costs me $300 a month for these two insurances, but it covers everything. Don't even have an office co-pay.

I did see a PT for a few sessions about a year ago and she gave me strength training exercises (leg lifts, core training and such) but it's not aerobic. I like using the Elliptical machine a lot.

Does your local hospital have a fitness center? Sometimes they will have a program that Medicare will pay for, if it's for a medical condition.

Also, some gyms will offer a discounted 3-5 month rate for the winter month.

Could you setup your bike on one of those stationary contraptions and ride inside?

The church I work at has two workout rooms (guys/gals), a running track, and a basketball court, so it's easy for me to get some exercise in, especially basketball on Monday nights.

I usually like running the hills in my neighborhood though. I don't do much lifting -- almost none.

I'm in no shape to exercise.
Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

Really. I have a couple of friends who do it here and it certainly works for them. However, it has far too much jerking and free form lifting for me to want to do it. I had a rotator cuff injury years ago from working out and as a result strict form and structure became paramount for me so I could avoid anything like that again.

It looks pretty badass but it also seems to have a higher than normal amount of injuries as a result of using the program.

Also no one should exercise more than 4 times a week if they are really doing it properly. 5 times maybe if they are training for an endurance event or something similar.

I play basketball and volleyball once a week each with guys from my company if I'm in town, which hasn't been often lately. For a while this summer I was playing sand volleyball 2 or 3 times a week until floods took out the volleyball courts.

The basis of the program SHOULD be on form. For all the movements. The progression should be:
1. Learn the correct form for any given movement. This can/should be done with as little weight as possible.
2. As you get your form better, add weight.
3. Add intensity.

Doing any of those out of order is what gives the program a bad name (see crossfit references to someone looking like they're having a seizure with weights).

The program is scalable to anyone. Any age. Any injury. Is a 70 year old person going to do a 400lb deadlift? Probably not. Will they get benefit from working towards and doing a 100# deadlift? Absolutely.

I haven't seen a "higher amount of injuries" from this program. What are you using as evidence for that?

At our gym (the gym I go to), since the main focus is on form, we see a lot less injuries in our gym. We get soreness and the occasional strain, but nothing out of the norm for a fitness program. Our people that use the program for general physical preparedness for something like rugby, they tear their shoulders up all the time while playing, not while training.

True but since in practice is has a social component you get some people in there who feel pressure to push beyond the levels they are ready to work with and that leads to all sorts of problems. And while that can be true in any gym environment it seems crossfit groups are particularly prone to people trying to show off.

Just the people I know and have met through friends who do it. There seems to be quite a few more joint issues they suffer from than people I know of the same fitness level who do other programs. I stated that I know the program is effective but from what I've seen its not for me. I wouldn't feel comfortable using the same amount of weight doing crossfit as I would in my normal weight training program just because it is more free form by comparison. And I'd certainly be more hesitant to push myself beyond the point failure if I ever did crossfit.

Well of course a contact sport is going to lead to higher amount of injuries than any workout program.

Good point. Show off or cheat. haha. The trainer just needs to keep that stuff in line, assuming they're worth their salt.

I'm in the gym 5 days a week pretty consistently.

Day 1: Chest/Triceps (light-medium)/Cardio 15-30 minutes
Day 2: Legs/Abs/Cardion 30-45 minutes
Day 3: Back/Biceps (light-medium)/Cardio 15-30 minutes
Day 4: Shoulders/Traps/Forearms/Cardio 30-45 minutes
Day 5: Biceps (heavy)/Triceps (heavy)/Cardio 15-30 minutes

I don't go five days in a row. I usually do 3 days on, one day off, 2 days on, one day off.

Its a fun, constructive hobby and a great way to meet new people. Its a good way to satisfy the need to meet new challenges and to constantly push yourself. Not to mention it makes you feel better both physiologically and in confidence (lets face it, when you look in the mirror and start to see the improvements and you start to hear the compliments from friends/relatives/members of the opposite sex, it makes you feel good). I've been lifting seriously for about two years now. I met my girlfriend that I've been with for about 8 months now at the gym. Lifting and going to the gym is a great hobby and it has done wonders for me.

I gained 10-15 pounds this summer in SC drinking cheap beer and eating lots of bacon and low-country food. Moved down to south Florida and started eating healthier and running again. I lost all the weight in less than a month. Every other night, I run a few miles barefoot on the beach, do several sets of pull-ups on the pier, run back home, and do several sets of push-ups and crunches. I really started to notice improvement when I gave myself a rest day every other day. It's been over 6 weeks since I've missed a workout.

I sort of went to the gym off-n-on when i got to university...but there were too many distractions(parties, school, work....snow).

But now that i have a regular 'desk job', i try to get in some physical exercise daily...during work days(5 days) i hit the gym for 45-75 minutes(weights), and on weekends i usually hit the surf(lot of cardio).

Personally i'd prefer to go surfing or play sport instead of the gym, cause the gym makes me feel like a hamster in a cage.

Cheers
