i dont know much about networks but heres my issue....
we have an open network here at my school. we use ethernet cables to access. on my crappy dell the school gave me, i plug in and dont have any problems. on my MBP, i often times plug in and dont get a valid IP address so i cant go online. i get a 168 ip instead of a 198 (which always works). idk if that makes sense but what i mean is the ips that work start with 198 and the ones that dont start with 168. i try replugging in and rebooting to no avail..
i also open terminal and type:
sudo ipconfig reconfig set en0 BOOTP
sudo ipconfig reconfig set en0 DHCP and it doesnt help.
then, next morning it works again!
its very intermittent and has no specific cause.
thanks, adam

How is your Dell set up? Static or DHCP IP addresses? You may need to set up your MBP up for static IPs.

I am assuming you are NEVER able to get on this network at school with your MBP?
"then next moring it works again"......on your Dell, right?
Being that it is a school, maybe they have MAC address filtering enabled only allowing the computers issued by the school to get a valid IP.

no, it works sometimes and i am actually on my MBP now.
right now i have a valid internet IP.
what usually happens is i sleep the computer and come back, and my ip has changed from a valid one (usually starting with 198), to one starting in 168, which isnt valid for internet access. then, no combination of plugging and unplugging, or restarting helps...it just chooses when to work again on its own.

Now that you've got a working IP etc, why not change to a static IP and copy all of your current IP info in.

Both the 198.x.x.x and the 168.x.x.x addresses are in the public IP range. It seems odd to me that either would be used for a school's LAN.
Is it possible that there is a wireless network with the 168.x.x.x subnet? When your Dell connects, does it get an address in the 198 subnet?
