Hey all!

I'm really racking in some good grad. money, and I've decided to buy a Mac and refill my bank acct. over summer...I'm going to buy the eMac 799.00 deal...I have a nice PC ATM, and I play on removing the CD-Rom and putting in my DVD+RW drive(yes, I've checked, it'll work) and upgrading the Ram to 512mb...will this be a good setup? I'm really psyched over this!

Congratulations!! I remember the early days of my first Mac- I wish I could experience that level of excitement again. Enjoy, and be sure to come back here with any questions you may have.

The Mac experience is great! Glad you're switching.

What software do you plan to use with your DVD burner? Although your eMac may be able to use the drive, I think Apple's iDVD software does not support any drive except for the Pioneer DVD-R brands (104 and 105).

iTunes used to only support internal CD burners, but now it supports nearly all of them, both external and internal. Some have speculated that iDVD will move in that direction as well (if it hasn't already).

Although it might be fun to open your eMac to replace the drive, it probably voids your warranty. You might want to consider buying an external firewire enclosure for the burner instead.

No matter what you do, I'm sure you'll enjoy using your Mac many times greater than your old PC!

Justin,

If everything works out compatibility-wise I think you'll be VERY happy with the setup. I just bought one of the new 1ghz emacs with the superdrive, upgraded the ram and the machine is great (check out my review on this same message board).

I have to say, you might want to spend a few extra dollars and upgrade to either the combo or the superdrive . . . because other than the drive you'll also get the iLife software which enables you to take advantage of that great hardware. It's worth looking into and maybe spending a few extra bucks to get something a little better.

About the drive swap, seriously consider an external or upgrading through apple before opening up your machine and voiding the warranty. If you've done your homework and read anything about the emac you'll surely know, even after all these years, that it's still a little flaky and is often prone to problems (crt, etc.). Voiding the warranty could render your shiney new mac a shiney new paper weight.

Luck with the decision.

cheers,
brian

Alrighty, I will do an enclosure-type thing for my burner..

Another thing...

If I do purchase this eMac, is the initial 128mb Ram in the bottom compartment? I want to just remove the stick and put in an extra 1gb pc133 stick I just got....easy?

Extremely easy. Just like removing/installing RAM in a PC. Simply unscrew the compartment (shown in eMac manual I believe) and slide the stock RAM DIMM out and pop in up to two 512MB RAM DIMMS in there and you're good to go.
