Post your best find for Panther. Not just free shipping, but any extras/price breaks/rebate coupons. And buying a new G5 doesn't count....!

Where are the deals? Post them as they come up.

I've just noticed there doesn't seem to be an educational price on the Canadian Panther, yet. However, the American version has a $60 rebate or something.

I'll stay calm. For now.

I heard in the PB folder that ADC members get Panther for free. I know I'm part of ADC because I signed up last year to download the latest developer tools. I'm not currently taking any computing classes - does Apple check?
Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.

Only ADC members that have paid for their membership get the copy of current operating system. Not the ones who got it for free. If that was the case do you think anyone would pay for the OS ...

Is this an assumption (since Apple did that for Jaguar), or do you have specific confirmed knowledge that this is the case?

Being a teacher, I got Jaguar for free with that deal...it'd be nice if Panther were the same deal, although I doubt Apple would do that twice in a row.

From MacCentral:

"The standard Mac OS Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all customers who purchase a new Mac system on or after October 8; all customers who purchased a Power Mac G5 regardless of purchase date that do not have Panther included; and customers who purchase the Mac OS X version 10.2 "Jaguar" retail product on or after October 8 for a shipping and handling fee of $19.95."

My October 2003 Macworld has an ad from OWC (page 102) that is selling OS X 10.2.x for $49.99

Let's see...

Buy Jaguar and then pay Apple shipping and handling...

$49.99 + $19.95 = $69.94

I don't know what OWC charges for shipping and handling but I bet it's less than...

$129.00 - $69.94 = $59.06

Am I missing something?

Too good to be true. Checked OWC's web site and the $49.99 Jaguar was an upgrade CD. The full retail is $129.00.

Thought I was on to something.

In the UK the cheapest I have found so far is Jigsaw, offering 10.3 for 98.69 including next day shipping. This is not much less than the AppleStore at 99.01 but their shipping seems to take forever.

I am hoping that Cancom run the offer they had last time for regular customers. They had the best price I could find and always deliver quickly.

Amazon and a few other shops still don't show it at all.

I bought my PowerBook Friday October 3rd so I wasn't terribly happy when I read the Panther announcement yesterday. After writing a letter to Apple Customer Support I was still feeling obnoxious so I went to the Apple up to date page and plugged in my purchase date and serial number. It was accepted. Don't know what's going to happen come October 24 but at the moment I have an email from Apple confirming my order.

I would really like to know why the discount for US government employees. What does Apple have to gain by sucking up to them?

Sucking up to the gov't is never a bad idea.

I'm just surprised it is cheaper than the education discount.

All apple software is 50% off with the government discount, but the hardware discount isn't as good as the Edu one. Still pretty damn good, if you ask me.

The education price for schools is $99 Cdn.

At the U of A, the price for 10.2 is $129, so I assume 10.3 will be the same. The only problem is that the Microstore is horrible at actually getting products, so I'll be picking up my copy at WestWorld. They sometimes give me an education price; it seems to depend whom I talk to.

It's not just for employees of the fed gov't, but for those of contractors of particular agencies as well:

http://www.apple.com/r/store/governm...ppolicies.html

If you work for one, it's worth investigating whether the rules on the page above include you. The savings on hardware aren't huge, but they're not chickenfeed either. For example, a stock Dual G5 goes from $3K to $2700.

So if I have a relative that is either a teacher or a government employee, could that person purchase a copy of Panther for me legally?

From the cited page:

PROGRAM AGREEMENT

The Federal Government Employee Purchase Program (EPP) is a benefit provided by Apple Computer, Inc. ("Apple"), to employees and contractors of selected agencies. The program is intended for personal use or for the use of family members and friends.

-----

The answer would appear to be "yes", though that's quite a liberal policy!

Then they're ripping people off, frankly. I paid $129 for 10.0 and 10.2, but now that the exchange rate is more favourable towards Canada education pricing should be $99 for Panther.

If they refuse to lower the price for you, say you'll buy it direct from the Apple Store for $99. This is the price I get when I punch in my student number for my university.

OK, to be fair they're not ripping people off--they probably bought that batch when the exchange rates weren't as good. But they'll have no choice but to lower it once they put Panther next to the jaguar boxes!
