There are still some 800 combo drive imacs for 1100 available from resellers...

Just wondering if you think spending the extra

200 for the 1ghz is worth it.

How much faster is the 1ghz than the 800?

All I want is the nice screen, which they both have.

But if the new one is much faster I might have to get that.

I guess I would get Panther with the new one though.

I would get the 1GHz. It might be $200 more, but you won't think about upgrading for another 6 months longer than you would if you had the 800. I have an 800, and every time i look at the new 1.25GHz, i ponder the speed difference and whether it would be worth upgrading. IT WOULDN'T, and that's the outcome i get every time...but i would try to get as much speed as you can.

It depends....

If you don't need the extra HD space or USB 2.0, I would say no.

The extra chip speed is negligable.

Get an 800 and throw in extra RAM.

Those 800s are a good deal.

It's not just the processor:

faster bus
better video card
DDR ram
Airport Extreme (802.11g not b)
USB 2.0
Panther

I have a 17" 800 and love it (plenty fast enough), but all those improvements are worth it. Go for the 1 GHz.

Once again, if you DON'T NEED it, there is NO reason to buy it.

Panther: It does NOT come with Panther. You must pay $20 for upgrade CDs.

Video Card: If you don't play games, no biggy. All iMacs have at least 32 megs of ram for Quartz Extreme and Panther's neat visuals. And any Mac with less than 64 megs of video ram sucks at high end games anyway.

Faster Bus: Again, not a big speed increase.

DDR: The difference with DDR Ram in G4 Macs is negligable.

USB 2.0: How many USB 2.0 devices do you have?

Airport Extreme: Useless unless you are networking two Macs (both with Extreme) and wish to transfer files at double the speed of Airport, which I have done, once. Remember, Airport Extreme only speeds up networking, NOT your internet connection. Regular old Airport is fine for 99% of users.

People who buy iMacs realize that by the time they want to upgrade, it's usually more practical to buy a whole new machine. That being said:

I think it's worth getting the USB 2.0 even if you don't have any 2.0 devices. A trip to any electronics store will reveal lots of devices for USB 2.0, far more (and cheaper) than firewire devices.

To me, the 1 Gig is the better option, but if it's a decision between the 1 G with stock RAM and the 800 with extra RAM (like 768 Megs), I'd go with the 800. Get your RAM now so you can enjoy its benefits for the entire life of your Mac.
