I would like to get a MacBook, but I have a question. I'm a teacher and over half of my documents are in Appleworks. I understand that there is no "universal" version of Appleworks for the Intel Macs. Can I load Appleworks on a MacBook? Will it run using Rosetta? If so, is it really slow?
Thanks!

I've heard that Appleworks works perfectly on Intel Macs through Rosetta (though I don't have one myself). A little slower than natively, but not terribly so. Also, I'm pretty sure that Office 2004 can read Appleworks files, so you should be fine either way.

I tried loading it just for the hell of it, and it's definitely not slow. Remember that this is a program that doesn't tax the system much, and one that came out 3-4 years ago.
Time to move on though. Also MacBooks don't come with AppleWorks, so you'll have to have a copy of it already.

Office 2004 can't read the .cwk documents I tried. I didn't bother looking for a translator though. However, Pages opens these files just fine. Also, AppleWorks will save in Word format, and will import Word files.

Thank you checking! That takes such a load off of my mind.
Yes, I know it's time to move on. I use Pages to create new worksheets. BUT, I have hundreds of documents that I've created using the drawing program on Appleworks. I can't open them with Word or Pages. I'll redo them over time, but I still need Appleworks for a while.
Thank you both again.

You could probably find/create an applescript or automator action to batch export them all to PDF.
