Try using cocktail.

Maybe something here will help:

http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/sh...&Number=585323

You can also run something called diskutil from the command line.

This sounds like the exact symptoms I had with a bad sector on my boot drive, which under Tiger sometimes caused a KP. Panther would just hang when reading from it.

I would boot from an external source, such as an OS X installation disk and try the Disk Utility repair once more. It will probably still hang. DiskWarrior is a good program that I have used to fix certain disk directory problems that Disk Utility would not fix.

At that point, backup all of your data, and use Disk Utility to reformat the drive. Use the zero contents option, so it will map out any unreadable sectors. should there be any.

I need to top this because it has started doing it to me too, after applying the latest QT and iTunes update.

Any new insights?

I did a software update with 1-11-06 with itunes, quicktime, ipod and safari and this same message popped up after I tried to repair permissions. I am running OS 10.3.9 on a powerbook.

No other problems but this kinda worries me. I like to repair permissions after a software update.

I ran a full TechTool scan last night (including the surface scan), and it passed every test. Has anyone had success using Cocktail to repair permissions yet?

Still searching...

There is a problem with iTunes 6.0.2 that causes Disk Utility to display the error message. I had the same problem after upgrading to 6.0.2.

The problem has been discussed at the Apple forums:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread....08456&tstart=0

I removed 6.0.2 and the receipt from the Applications and Library folders and reinstalled 6.0.1 (a copy of 6.0.1 is still available on the .Mac accounts).

My problem is not fixed by moving iTunes 6.02, since I still am using 6.01...

Disk warrior says cannot repair!

I am out of town without Tiger DVD and same problem occurs on back firewire (cloned drive)

I guess problem existed prior to last cloning,,,,

Data is safe...

Hope all is well until I return home!

After removing the iTunes receipts, Disk Utility worked fine in repairing permissions. But the Cocktail and Onyx still hang when repairing permissions.
