Hello:

For a long while I have been getting my email through Apple Mail (.mac and my POP3 email) on my iBook. Now that I have a new G4, I'd like to be able to COPY that entire program onto my G4 so that it'll match the emails on my iBook.

Is that possible? If so, what is the best way to go abt it?

Thanks!
Raymond Luczak

Copy the following files:

~/Library/Mail
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

I just recently did this. No problems at all.

Just to be clear (and sorry if it's being pedantic... no idea how savvy Mr. Luczak is.. ), that's copying the entire Mail folder from your Home/Library folder, as well as the .plist file.

Your Home directory is located at /Users/YourUserName/, so copy the folder /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail, and use it to replace the folder by the same name on the G4.

The tilde ("~") indicates your home directory.

Thanks for your answer.

Just to clarify: The tilde ( ~ ) refers to the user's library folder, not the shared library folder, correct?

Again, many thanks in advance.

Sorry, I was not very clear. The tilde (~) doesn't refer to any Library folder at all. It refers to the Home folder of whatever user is being discussed. So lets say your username is Ray, then "~/" equals "/Users/Ray/"... the tilde is just shorthand for "the home folder of user X"

The library folder is then "~/Library/" or "/Users/Ray/Library/"

I think that what you are referring to as the shared library folder is the Libary folder at the root level? "/Library"? Right, ~ does not refer to that...

Would you need to fix the permissions? Maybe if the other machine had a different user name?

I didn't have to. My iBook had a different username and everything.

Hey--

I have a similar question, but with my Address book from my iBook to my new G4.

What should I do?

Thanks again.

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook

replace this folder on the G4 with this folder from the old machine.
