hey guys/ladies,
i want your comments on this. It'd greatly help me. How do you think the internet has impacted you and your culture? what do you do different with the internet, as opposed to without the internet. A good way of thinking about it is like this:

you've never heard of the internet before. one day, you were granted access to it. what would you do? how has this new tool impacted your way of life?

discuss

Is this for a high school/college paper? I'll try to help you out.

(1) Information. Things that I used to have to go to the library or bookstore for, or send away for, or make a phone call about, are now within easy reach on my desktop. Everything from legal research to getting computer advice.

(2) Community. I can interact with people from all over the world without leaving my seat. I and other people I know have made real-life friends via the Internet.

(3) Communication. E-mail has allowed me to stay in better touch with friends and family and has also been useful for work.

(4) Shopping. Can evaluate and buy from your seat. Doesn't replace the hands-on shopping experience, but is a great adjunct to it. It's basically an electronic form of mail-order catalog shopping.

(5) Entertainment. I don't have broadband so I can't do much in the way of entertainment, but it's certainly important to a lot of other people.

These things all overlap. MacNN, for example, can be informative and communal and entertaining, all at the same time.

Still, the internet isn't a complete replacement. I still go to the library, call friends and family, read books and magazines, shop at stores, go to movies, etc. It's an extra tool and an extra diversion, like the automobile and the telephone.

Hope this helps.

Uhh porn.

Yeah I think that's probably the most negative thing about the net. The whole... it's there, why not look at it, I think pertty soon there will be get off porn hormone kids and what not.
haha

Hey don't laugh, granted masturbation wont' give you cancer... but lotsa people are gona be like... many you know I odn't like this I really don't, and they're gona quit... well ok no they won't... but there will be a patch.

Anyway, uhh community deffinately, I can acctually find other people who enjoy the same types of music and stuff as me.

Uhh, I think in general it's offered just a better way to communicate with eachother.
Also a cheap way to get free things but... I don't do that.. yeah...

1. Communication...email and instant messaging are great ways for me to keep in touch with far-away friends and relatives

2. Information...up-to-the-minute news and financial information, online maps, government websites, train/bus schedules, tax forms, white papers, technical reserach, MIT courses...I can do more with the Internet than I ever could in a library, it's the first place I look for almost anything

3. Entertainment...forums, usenet groups, websites, games, *cough* Porn *ahem*...the Internet is my playground

4. Shopping...I always research major purchases online. Even if I don't buy something online, the Internet lets me get a feel for an item's "Best Price"

Well, that's what I use it for now anyway. I've been online too long to give you a "New tool...what do you use it for first" response.
