I have a late 2009 27" iMac with a 1 TB hard drive. I really need an upgrade, at least 2 TB, and would greatly prefer an internal solution. Where do I start?

I think you need to match the original drive make due to a temp sensor. Take a look for a guide on ifixit.com.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Apple made it so hard you really don't want to do it. If you really really want to do it, ifixit is the place.

$70 FW800 enclosure + $170 3TB 7200RPM drive would be my suggestion; 2TB is too small, 4TB is too expensive.
