I have a problem I need to solve. I have tried to use programs like Smultron to save a text (.txt) that does not show like a continuous stream of characters in Windows Notepad.
Does anyone know of a Mac utility that will produce files with the correct formatting? I want to share text files generated on the Mac with Windows machines and use Notepad to open these files.
While TextEdit produces correctly formatted .rtf files, those have to be opened in Word and cannot be read by Notepad. What native text format does Notepad require to avoid this situation?

Sounds like you just need to set your editor to use windows newline characters.

Um, I've tried all the TextEdit output settings. None work, except .rtf. I just downloaded this utility, called EOL:
EOL Convert text file line endings to Windows(CRLF), Unix(LF) or Mac(CR) format
But even after converting a .txt file from Mac (CR) to Windows (CRLF), the problem remains the same, you can see that the CRs (little square boxes) still are in the file without having been converted properly to linebreaks.

Be aware that MacOS uses Unix (LF) endings now. Try converting from those.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Regular .txt files should work in ANY application that supports them. If Notepad isn't displaying them correctly, get a better application. MS is known for making standards unstandard. I hope at least they have stopped trying to push xml files over PDF ones. It's too late...
