Just tried it out. I love it. I think it's the perfect evolution of Google Search. Wondering what you guys thought of it.

I hate the way it completely rearranges the layout of the page. Very distracting. The search bar should start at the top of the page if they're going to do it that way. Also, most of the time after I start typing it rearranges the page but results never show up.
I just search from the address bar in Chrome anyway.

I agree they need to do something about the page rearranging itself... that is distracting.

I keep the first tab in my browser window on google.com and do my searches there. I then just cmd+click to navigate to any of the results.

I find the dedicated search bar to be a better solution.

Yes, what's the rush? The dedicated search bar works for me. So did hooked on phonics.

Doesn't work with IE7 (which I have to use at work).
I probably don't need it anyways.

Doesn't work at all for me, not that I really care that much. I just use the search bar on myfav.es.

Seems to just be Google making their homepage work like Glims. Just much faster. I'd much prefer that the search bar worked like this by default without the need for a plugin.

As a consumer, very distracting. As someone who does SEO consulting, it's going to be interesting to see how this impacts Ad Words and people finding sites with it trying to predict what the user wants.

If you have the new Safari, there's a great Extension "Old Google Image Search" that kills the new annoying look.

Some day, when Google has the chip implant ready, you'll have your search results in milliseconds.

For some reason, occasionally when I right click an image to copy its URL in Safari, it will instead select whatever's behind the previewed image in front. It's annoying.

I guess I'm the only one who likes the new image search. I find scrolling so much faster than having to click the link at the bottom of the page.

It helps.... but I really wish they'd have a resizable preview, like the slider in iPhoto.

It's pretty crazy that we're getting consensus on the image search. And I haven't noticed any complaint on the tech blogs.

I love the new image search. You guys can go to hell back to 2009. (edit: did that sound too impassioned? I don't really care that much)
Instant search doesn't seem to add much, and looks insanely wasteful, eco-freakishly speaking.

New image search is horrendous, because I dislike pop-up crap and the way it handles the image once you've clicked on it is utterly retarded.
Haven't seen the instant search, because I'm not getting it here (one of the benefits of using 10.4.11 with a slightly outdated Safari maybe?).

Well, just used the new search. Hit the right arrow key to take the cursor to end of auto-fill text and it instead took me to (what I presume is) the first search result. That's pretty irritating.

^ I think you might have inadvertently hit the arrow key twice. A single hit on the right arrow is doing the auto-complete as expected. It seems when you hit the right arrow when there is no auto-complete text available it takes you to the first search result.

Nope, one right arrow does "I'm feeling lucky" on any auto complete.

Not here - it only does "I'm feeling lucky" if my cursor is already at the end of the input box.

Maybe I'm just an idiot today, but I don't notice any difference at all in the way google is delivering results. Not sure what this 'instant' thing is all about. I tried it with both Safari and Firefox. Maybe it's not available in Canada for some reason?

Think I read somewhere that outside the US and A it's only available if you log in to Google. I logged in and it still wouldn't work.

It's very inelegant. I can understand the desire to use it. But some basic javascript animation would make the whole thing make more sense. Instead it's VERY QUICK, but also VERY JUMPY and JUMPY interfaces confuse people and make them think something's wrong... when it's just Google being Google.

Now you've really lost me. I type something into google and a whole list of things appear. If I hit up and down, I can change my selection within the list (my cursor is now flashing at the end of the input box). Because my cursor is at the end of the input box now, of course one right will cause "I'm Feeling Luck" to be invoked (that's the way the intended it). If you wanted to type something else at the end, just start typing - that's where you cursor is already. If you hit left, you'll go back into the middle of your word.
So maybe you're not noticing that moving up and down in the drop down list is automatically positioning your cursor at the end of the input box...?

Bingo. Why do I get the feeling it always did this? (Still it drives me nuts that these boxes don't follow OS X rules for cursor commands)

I'll have to reserve judgment because right now I'm on a slow cellular Internet connection. But as it stands it seems somewhat pointless.

Personally I can't stand it. I think they're trying to speed up an already fast process. Now when I'm trying to search for something I get an obnoxious drop down with random guesses on where my fingers are going. Also the layout doesn't look as pretty. But hey it may work for some folks.

Google Instant Search is more proof to something I was debating with somebody here some time ago, namely that the web is moving towards AJAX reloading of pieces of webpages rather than complete page reloads. This is faster, esp. for mobile devices on slower connections.
Salty: the problem with the animation is that this results in more Javascript needing to be loaded which changes the whole calculus as to how Google scales. You might think that a k or two for this Javascript is irrelevant, but multiplied by the number of connections Google has to serve, ever fraction of a k is a very big deal. Perhaps they felt that this added bit would be worth this tradeoff.

Well, there are people that dislike Javascript triggered navigation such as this, at least based on past conversations we've had, although to be fair I think the complaint was against nav that did not yield bookmarkable URLs and a working back button, unlike what Google has done here.
