Seems to me this thread can be about any vehicle.

Second (or third?) the Subaru Outback. Reliable, can haul tons of gear, excellent in snow, comfortable. If only it got better gas mileage. I'm having a hard time talking myself out of buying another when this one shuffles off this mortal coil.

That's the price you pay for AWD. It has a lot more parasitic drivetrain loss. It's too bad they don't offer push button 4wd like they used to in the 80s.

Mine is getting 32mpg on the highway.

You can put a fuse in the FWD thing under the hood, but the tests show that the gas mileage for RWD and AWD to be the same.

You mean FWD. The FWD fuse removes the power from the rear wheels. The only way to make it RWD is to weld the center diff together and remove the front axles. That said, there is still a lot of loss going on, even with the fuse in. It is not the same thing, hence why the FWD subarus of like 94-96 got better MPG than the AWD ones.

I think the ones with on demand 4WD were much older than that, weren't they? My first was an 84 and pretty sure that had the button. Not sure if my 89 did. The internet isn't telling me.
I haven't gotten 32 highway in a long time!

I'll put a fourth in for the Subaru Outback.
Starting to see a lot of these guys around here, pretty much the ideal car for our climate. We very rarely get deep deep snow, but we get plenty of ice and slush.
Of course if we are talking about any vehicle my vote is for the Tatra T805
Czech-built unstoppable AWD beast. Probably a slug on roads, but go watch some videos of it in deep mud and snow and you'll see why I consider Tatra the most reliable extreme off-road vehicle ever made.

Sweet pics Doof. Looks like those Landys have one thing missing that makes Tatra amazing off road, portal hubs for both axles that allow for some serious flex.
I got into a Tatra binge on youtube a while back.
Started off watching the 8x8s (which get like 4 gallons per mile) and ended up looking at the old T805s. People can get one, not in great shape, for like 5000 bucks and embarrass the hell out of any number of extreme 4x4 vehicles costing a fortune more. Mogs are sweet too, but tend to run way more expensive. Not sure about old Landys, though I'd imagine the more desirable models are quite pricey. I like old Tatras because they are notoriously reliable, easy to fix, and pretty cheap to get started on.
I'd like to get an old T805 one of these years and take it deep into the woods.

And you can stick body kits on them:

I hear ya. I've got a thing for old Soviet/Eastern Bloc military stuff myself.

Aww, they ruined a perfectly cool looking Landy with that bodykit.
I, too, have a fetish for old Soviet military vehicles. They might not be pretty, they might not be efficient, but if I was trapped in Siberia I wouldn't want anything but.

That thing looks like something Michael Bay would make. IDK if that's good or bad. But it sure is crazy!
