This strange effect has suddenly started on my colleagues machine:

and here's a close up:


I've deleted the desktop preferences and zapped the p-ram but they're still there. There's a few that also follow the cursor around the screen. They don't appear in any of the application windows. Any ideas... could it be hardware?????

This is happening on a Dual 2ghz Power PC, OSX 10.4.11, 2g RAM, ATI Radeon 9800pro, 17" Apple Studio Display

Graphics card problem. Since this is a tower, you should be able to replace it relatively easily.

Thanks for the diagnosis.... and you were correct.
Managed to get a graphics card on eBay (a bit uncertain if I was getting the right one as there's so many and only a small handful seemed suitable for the G5). It arrived this morning and I managed to swop the old out and the new in - works a treat now!
