http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...TRUE-pals.html

They boast of having hundreds of friends who regularly send them messages, photos, pokes and kisses.

But, in reality, members of the Facebook generation only have a handful of true friends, research shows.

The study - carried out by Facebook - found that while the average user will be belong to a network of over 100 friends, they will be in regular contact with just a handful.

The others will, like friends of friends met at parties, will merely be acquaintances.

Facebook sociologist Dr Cameron Marlow calculated that the average member of the social networking site counts 120 other users as 'friends'.

However, some people have networks of more than 500 pals, with women tending to have more than men.

But while a man may cite 120 people as friends, he regularly corresponds with just four of them.

For a woman, the number is six, this week's issue of The Economist reports.

Men with 500 online friends only regularly communicate with ten, while for women the figure is 16.

Experts say that people who are members of online social sites are not so much 'networking' as 'broadcasting their lives to an outer tier of acquaintances'.

Or, as the Economist states: 'Humans may be advertising themselves more efficiently. But they still have the same small circles of intimacy as ever.'

But Graham Jones, a psychologist specialising in the impact of the internet, said it was likely the under-25s would have many more true online friends than their older counterparts.

He said that contrary that online networking could encourage people to be more sociable in real life, by helping them overcome shyness.

'The people who are most active socially on Facebook are the most active socially in the real world,' he said.

'Facebook was originally set up to arrange the social life of university students. People use it to arrange parties, meetings and events.

'It encourages going out and face-to-face activity, rather than the reverse.'

But not everyone agrees.

Earlier this week, neuroscientist Susan Greenfield claimed that social networking sites were causing alarming changes in the brains of young users.

Sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Bebo are shortening attention spans, encouraging instant gratification and making young people more self-centred, she warned.

Baroness Greenfield, an Oxford University neuroscientist and director of the Royal Institution, believes repeated exposure could effectively ‘rewire’ the brain.

Every time I log into Facebook, I find about sixty "karma" points, potted plants, donated this's and thats, good luck charms, and other annoying and useless bullshit.

Am I just not getting the hang of it, or what?

I mean, I really appreciate being in loose contact again with all sorts of people I haven't heard from in ages (due to huge geographic differences), but having to put up with all that crap drives me away again for weeks at a time...

urgh.

I hate Facebook.

Spheric: I agree! It seems like people either love or hate that stuff. I just found a dismiss all type link in my account the other day, I wish there was a "don't bother me with stupid **** ever" button

I'm not into the whole social networking scene, life is too short to worry about some dude's girlfriend's mother's azalea.
I imagine if I was a teen it would be different. Whatever.

How is this different from before facebook? Now its just a matter of there being a way to quantify it because the names of the people are in one place.

Facebook is a semi-public rolodex.

What I dislike about its existence is that facebook invitations are traded with phone numbers when you meet girls these days. It makes being able to disappear from their radar after the next day much harder. You either burn a bridge or are stuck with them keeping tabs on you.

I found that it was typically the same people sending me those invites over and over, and it's oftentimes people that are new to Facebook and still in the "click everything!" stage. Those people are no longer my friends.

It's not really. I just wanted the opportunity to call Facebook users a bunch of saddos and then this story presented itself.

I constantly get friend requests from the twatbags I went to high school with. I ignore all of them. In fact, I'm more particular about facebook friends than anywhere else, because all my personal information is on my Facebook profile - I only friend people I know IRL (friends and family), or people who have been Internet friends for a long time (several years at least).

I also don't add applications and crap. I mostly use FB as a way to message people who never get online and/or I don't know their email address.

I signed in to Facebook a few months ago just to see what the hype was all about. It's a pain in the ass to navigate that website. It's horrible.

But I did meet some people I graduated high school with. That was pretty cool. I haven't been on in a month.

The old design was light years better. The new one is okay (I don't think it'll ever be as shitty as MySpace), but definitely not nearly as good.

the usefulness of facebook:

keeping up to date with the little things (trips, pictures, emotions, etc.) of actual friends. this is useful so that, when you meet up with these people in real life, you won't have to go through the rehash of asking them what they've been up to. you already know. now you're prepared to discuss it.

not unless you have like 500 fb friends.

i mean, even if you see one of them EVERYDAY, it will take you more than a year to meet them all.

Just did a quick check: 641 friends. But one of them is my ex-girlfriend, so it really should be 640 friends. Oh yeah, and my mom, so 639.

Do exes not count anymore, or are you just not on good terms?

I was actually in a relationship throughout the entire rise of Facebook, so I've never had this problem. If I wasn't on good terms with someone, they never got added to begin with.

I quit my account a few months ago. It didn't add anything to my friendships, and i got fed up with old classmates (who i never was friends with) who tried to get into touch. A picture of a stranger with an even stranger girlfriend who invites me to be his "friend".. this had to end somewhere. Also, I didn't the fact that any girl I meet to see who my previous girlfriends have been. It didn't take much thought to see that a fun "friends" network could easily turn against me.

Life without is better.

Aren't the FB users here concerned about their privacy? At least in a forum one can (sort of) hide personal info.

Basically I have a very very un-common last name, there is no fookin way that I'm going on FB. Might change my name to John Smith. In one of the latest Fortune magazines, there is a large article about FB, how popular it is and how companies are using it to recruit people. Of course every week someone gets sacked for posting about their boring job, or their fraudulent boss.

As for past fellow students, besides wanting to beat up a couple of the bullies, I can't say that I'd ever want to meet anyone ever again. And no, I was not a weak little geek at school.

There's also the issue of who owns the data that you put onto FB. I haven't heard what the law says about Europeans who post on FB.

I find Facebook useful for maintaining contact with large groups of people. But, just because I use Facebook doesn't mean that I'm required to post multiple times a day my deepest darkest secrets or content that I want my ownership questioned about.

Privacy and ownership of content is no different on Facebook than on any other place in the Internet. If I don't want it public, I don't post it.

By default only friends and people in your network can see your profile, and you can muck with that all you want to restrict who can see your data.

I know someone who restricts most their data actually, even to their friends... They actually trim their wall too so people can't see their history.

Pretty dodgy data to be basing such a statement on.

I have a facebook page, which I rarely visit; and I've never made a 'post' on another persons page.

I tend to use phones and physical contact, myself.

My wife had to drag me kicking and screaming just to sign up. I mean, I thought for sure it'd be just another twitter, Xanga, Myspace, Tagged, etc...

Speaking of ****ing creepy, my wife gives me a hard time for my updates because she thinks I sound creepy.
I've been cycling through a few of them lately such as;
- ebuddy is reading your info
- ebuddy is looking at you
- ebuddy is watching you
- ebuddy is rifling through your friends
- ebuddy is sending out friend requests to folks in the "people of planet earth" community
- ebuddy is on his way over

Stuff like that. I mean, those updates are such a mind-numbing thing to begin with.

I've never even been to facebook.com but I presume it's an awfully designed website with a zillion links and flashing icons and crap to annoy me. Even if I did sign up, I know I'd never use the site.

I keep my OS X Address Book up to date with all of the people I want to stay in contact with and have a relatively robust iWeb created site that is only available to my friends and family that I keep updated with pics and videos of my life and travels.

Those are the only tools I need. I like to keep things simple.

Did anyone catch this in the linked article?

It’s not that bad, actually. Unlike MySpace, it doesn’t have a zillion links and flashing icons to annoy you. Like MySpace, though, it does have a zillion flashing users to annoy you.

Those *are* pretty creepy. But, I definitely agree with you about the mind-numbingness of Facebook status updates and don't really understand the need some people seem to have to say "... is going out to supper" or "... is going to bed now". The only times I post a status update, it's usually more of a broad announcement to my friends rather than an update of my status. Looking back at my history, I don't seem to post status updates more than once every two weeks. Most of my activity is just linking to my flickr photos.

Twitter is the same way.

The whole "microblogging" phenomenon stems from people's belief that others actually give a crap about what they're doing every second of every day. It's completely self-involved.

Everyone at work uses Twitter, and I'm still trying to figure out why. The only useful part of it I've seen is when someone posts a tweet saying that a service is down, and one of the admins of that service tweets back that they're working on it. Otherwise, who cares?

I heard of a group in some city (SF?) that tweets about traffic jams. I can see the usefulness of that ... though perhaps a little bit dangerous.

I'm with DH on this. I started so I could keep up with classmates when we scattered to do field work, and it's been quite useful for that. My wife and her sisters, as well as my own siblings are on Facebook, which lets me keep up with what they're doing on a casual basis, even though our siblings are hundreds or thousands of miles away. This is all a "good thing." I've even discovered that many of my high school classmates are on Facebook, and it's interesting (and non-demanding) to catch up with them this way.

But I don't have hundreds of friends on Facebook, just a few dozen; they're people I really want to keep up with, not just numbers.

I don't think people post on Twitter blindly. Most of the people have their circle of friends that they follow.

+1 Obvious for that "Article"

Facebook is not for "collecting friends", it is to keep in touch with your acquaintances. It has relatively no bearing on your real life number of friends, nor the relationships you forge in the meat-sphere.

And seriously, with careful managing of the ignore-button and having a set of people who aren't 14 year olds coming from MySpace as your "friends" - you hardly get any "invite-noise" at all.
