Hello. Help...

Word quits after about an hour of use. I have logged as a new user and it still does it. I have replaced Word preferences, settings and all. I have launched Word while pressing shift down, that didn't work too. I have changed working files locations. Still quits.

I have a Powerbook Alu 1 ghz with a second monitor (Apple 17"). I have a second keyboard (from my old Yikes!) and a Canon printer plugged in a usb hub (Asant). I have tried with another keyboard (Aplle's newest) and it didn't solve the problem.

I have disactivated a whole bunch of fonts and it didn't make a difference.

I am finishing my thesis, and I have split the 350+ pages in 50-60 pages chapters, each a being a single document. I have tried Appleworks, Mellel, Marinewriter and they mess up my layout, so I would lose too much time working out a new layout.

I save automatically every minute, so I don't lose much when the app quits. But it's really getting on my nerve. It's the only thing that goes wrong on my sweet laptop.

I have no haxies installed. Panther 10.3.2 installed.

Please help me, I am fed-up.

Here's the latest bug report, I can't understand a thing:

Did you try reinstalling Office/Word? I assume that you've applied the latest update.

Yes I've reinstalled, and applied updates, and tried with different versions on different OS X (Jaguar and Panther) and even on different computers.

OpenOffice is not a solution since I would have to redo my layout and I don't have neither time nor patience for this.

Thanks again.

I must add that judging from the terminal, the system is swapping like crazy:

My Office v.X does the same thing too.

When I'm doing my reports on Word, it crashes every now and then. I too have to keep reminding myself to Cmd+S every now and then.

Sometimes I get so frustrated, I type everything in TextEdit then copy it to Word before formatting it, and exporting it to a pdf before I print it.

Hopes Office 2004 will, erm, crash less.

I know this doesn't solve your problem, but just a bit of advice. I lost several DAYS worth of painstaking footnote editing and formatting using Word when I did my thesis. Even though I was hitting 'save' every 10 minutes, the changes were NOT saving.

First and only time I have ever called a software company to complain (turned out it was a 'known issue' involving sub-documents, footnotes, etc. etc... baaah! BTW this was on a PC!)

Especially since Word is crashing and that can mess up saved files, I would really advise you to make SURE that you have multiple backups and double-check the integrity of the backups.

I required multiple pints of Eighty Shilling to recover. Good luck with the thesis
