Just so long as they aren't pastels. A nice earthy tone would be constent, yet conspicuously distinct.

Our notes are really bright so even blind people can tell them apart.

And they're made of plastic.

I never understood why Americans like their currency so much - it is so hard to tell the notes apart (read 'bills' for notes). At least in Australia you know if you are tucking a twenty or a five into a g-st.....

I've never minded looking at the digits on my money. Plastic money would be cool, though.

I think the Australian bills are extremely hard to counterfeit, aren't they?

Firstly they're plastic, secondly they have the clear window, the printing is incredibly intricate (text you can barely read without a magnifying glass), watermarks, all sorts of stuff...

How do they intend to remove all of the old bills from circulation? Until they do that and convince everyone to stop accepting them, a new bill design does nothing to prevent counterfeiting.

AFAIK, the system with new notes happens as follows: (happened in Australia 10 years ago was it?)

1) New notes are given to the banks to replace existing currency.

2) When individuals and businesses deposit money into the bank, it will be exchanged by the bank for new currency.

3) Over the space of 6 months the vast majority of the old currency has disappeared, since shops give new currency as change (as given to them by the banks)

After a certain amount of time, say 2 years, it would start to become rather suspicious if criminals were to counterfeit these old notes. They could not buy anything worth a decent amount of money without raising suspicion one would imagine.

I'm sure someone here knows, is this government allowed at any point to deem the old currency as 'useless'?

I was hoping they would do this with the last revision. US currency is so horsey, graphically speaking.

I like Canada's notes. Very well-designed.

Heh. Lobbying from the powerful strip club industry keeps all the bills looking the same.

I don't think the average American "likes" or "dislikes" the graphic design of US currency (and remember, very few have experience with other kinds of currency) -- I'd save the average American doesn't much care. The resistance to change has come from the Treasury, which has argued that the US currency is among the most recognized and hoarded currencies in the world. People who keep US currency under their mattresses are essentially floating the US government an interest-free loan.

Until really sophisticated counterfitting came along, it was "don't fix what isn't broken."

They constantly filter out old currency all the time. On average most of the paper currency in the US is only about 5-7 years old (of course there are exceptions).

If they wanted, they could do it much quicker:

Money goes into bank and sent to Fed. Fed destroys and issues new bills to bank. Bank only distribues new bills.

Suprising how quickly the old cash disappears.

Paper money is strong... but not strong enough to last very long. Hence it doesn't stay in circulation for very long. Then again... it's paper (well, thin fabric)... we can replace it at a relatively low cost.

Believe it or not, my fiancee actually had a couple of American tourists tell her "Your money is funny looking. How do you tell it apart?" (referring to Canadian money)

Hmmm... different colours, different faces, and different (big) numbers on it?

My only guess is that they tend to recognize bills by the presidents' faces. Since they didn't recognize anyone on our money, they were confused.

They certainly do.

Remember our $1 and $2 notes, and the 1 and 2 cent coins? They're not acceptable anymore. The coins being the most recent example. As for our old notes, all of the old paper style (bar the 1's and 2's) are still legit, but they'll certainly get you funny looks and a comment or two.

I like the green bills. Still, the really ugly money on the CNN site is just some designer who tinted photos of the bills a bit too much in Photoshop or something. They still haven't unveiled how they'll really look.

I hope they keep at least one green bill.

Are you literally saying that money has a sexual preference. OR, are you saying that the color is associated with gay people? I assume that latter and so wonder what you have against gay people and why making money the color associated with gay people is bad?

Offtopic a tad: I really wonder if it's the adult entertainment industry (strip clubs in this case) that killed the last US Indian Head "Dollar" coins. I remember seeing them in circulation for a few months and then they just vanished.

I swear it happened! Really! I'll see if I can find a little more info on it. That newsletter really seems to be poorly distributed. You actually get it? None of my gay friends at school do, and they quite annoyed by that fact.
