Pretty much.

Much like the iPhone, I think it's going to take a year before this thing begins to really shine.

There will definitely be an even larger market of apps here. Imagine a beautiful, well designed TaxCut. People might actually want to file their taxes!

On that note, this thing better have printer support. Wireless, obviously.

Agreed. Seems fair enough, claims that it's "just a big iPod Touch" aren't off the mark.

I'm sure it is a sweet-ass device, but much like the Air it seems the folks who actually need it are a very select few.

If I needed an ultra-portable computer I'd lean towards a cheap NetBook, maybe hackintosh it. This iPad seems a little gratuitous...which is definitely 100% Apple, but not enough to win me over.

Of course I buy less Apple stuff than most so why the hell would they cater a new device to cheapskates like me.

The biggest complaints are pretty obvious - no camera, no multitasking, no flash...

Still think it'll be a big hit - though not like the iPod or iPhone. The lack of a camera is puzzling though.

I feel it's important to note that the sane discussion appears to be happening in this thread, while the other one is the chippy, OMGWTFBBQ thread.

So, thanks Laminar.

Having no camera is dumb.

Maybe so Apple can sell you an iSight for your iPad.

Unless we find out its specs would suck at it, I imagine multitasking will find its way on after the first or second major revision.

I think with iPhone OS 4 they'll start allowing limited multitasking. Wouldn't be surprised if in OS X.7 we start seeing the ability to run iPhone apps as widgets. We already have an emulator and I get the feeling that emulating iPhone apps doesn't require that much effort. Not to mention Xcode's ability to compile universal binaries. Not to mention once Apps start going resolution independent could be pretty sweet.

I think Apple realizes they have a golden goose in the form of the app store and I think that will start helping the Mac a bit more overtly.

Btw I want one of these, not sure why I need one... but I want one.

I'm guessing that a lot of the apps that will be developed for the iPad are going to be quite a bit more sophisticated than what's available on the iPhone/Touch. The paint app was pretty darn impressive. If anything says "no" to the idea that it's just a big iPod Touch, that would be it, IMO.

I can't help but wonder if this thing is geared more towards education and less towards mainstream. (Edu market is a lot of money. Three classes, $450 in books, not even in grad school yet)

LEt's talk about how the home screen is ugly, with the wide spacing between icons and the photo in the background. Especially the dock. It just looks so empty. Can you put more then 4 apps in there?

I don't want to be a naysayer... but I think Apple missed the boat on this one. It does feel like the Air, as sek929 pointed out. It fits in between the iPhone and the Mac Book, so I'm pretty sure people are just going to levitate towards one or the other. If it had a pen of some kind, I could see it being more all purpose...

It looks okay with that nice lake pic and half a screen of icons, but throw a pic of the owners cat and a page full of icons on top of it and blech.

Did anyone notice that Steve called it an iPod in the keynote? right after he explained the how environmentally friendly the iPad was. Just another reason they should have gone with another name.

Interesting product. I do hours of reading at my computer each day and would welcome a more comfortable way to do it. Whether this is it, I don't know, but I look forward to trying it out in-store.

Like iPhone apps there are developers who are going to create amazing stuff we can't envision yet.

3G is cool. The integration and execution (no contract, reasonable $15) makes me wonder when/if this is coming to the MBP line.

The iPad is pretty much what I expected it to be. It may not be a game changer like the iPhone, but I suspect it will prove to be a wildly successful product. As with the iPhone, when first released the iPad will be rather lacking in features/functionality. There is almost nothing that distinguishes it from the iPhone except screen size. That said, in time it's potential in the education and commercial sector will be realized.

I've already set aside the funds to get one next time I'm in the States. No need for 3G as I'm sure it will be quite a while before they negotiate a deal in the DR.

Sucks that Stevie did not announce anything else. i.e., no updates to the existing line.

It appears that Apples own new "A4" chip is extremely fast. Everyone that has used the iPad is raving about the speed.

I really hope a for smaller version of that processor in this year’s iPhone refresh.

I was hoping for at least iLife 2k10 and iWorks 2k10<- I guess we sort of got a new version.

If Apple reduced that bezel, the device would have to grow thicker approx. 5mm thicker overall (if they stayed with those screen dimensions). Battery size here was an issue... at least that is what the hardware developer group told me over lunch way back in Nov.

I posted this elsewhere, but as the discussion here seems to be sane, here it goes too:

I think that Apple was in more of a rush to bring this to market than they would ever admit, and that this rush explains missing features like cameras and multi-tasking. The Kindle, and other readers, were grabbing marketshare and Apple had to get something out before the market was sewn up and too many people had made investments in other formats.

If there was to be a tablet, it had to be taken to market now before it was too late. Apple is morphing into a content delivery company and Jobs didn't want to see print media go elsewhere.

I am almost certain the gen2 will have all the features we're missing right now.

How could the lack of a camera be "rushed" if they put cams in almost everything they make?

Well, let's think about it.

A camera for taking pictures would be stupid. The iPad is far to big and clunky to be used as a camera.
But THAT's the kind of camera that Apple put into all their mobile devices.

What the iPad COULD use is a camera for iChat / video chats. But Apple hasn't done that before, so it's a new combination of hard- and software for the mobile device market.

I just guess this wasn't the top priority.

None of Apple's current products feature a non-video camera. The Mac Pro, Mac Mini, iPod Touch and iPod Classic all lack a camera altogether. The iPhone 3GS, MacBook Pro and iMac all have video cameras.

Oh yes it is:

Just like the iPhone is everything that other smartphones turned out not to be, the iPad is everything netbooks have turned out not to be.

This thing will wipe out most of the low-end laptop/home-computing market and replace it with something completely new and *much* more appropriate.

Well, of course the Mac Pro doesn't have a cam .

Their monitors DO. You left that whole line of products out.

The point is, plopping a camera in this thing for videoconferencing would have been a no-brainer.

Not without multi-tasking.

I'd love to have one of these for video chats, but if that's all I can do while chatting it would be worthless to me.
