Please excuse my ignorance in this area, but "Modem Magic" is a shareware that I've seen mentioned on various Mac websites, including MacNN, a set of modem scripts that the seller claims will result in faster connection speeds, and fewer disconnects.

If anyone has any knowledge, or experience, with this product, please share! I've e-mailed the author with questions, but don't get any response (usually a bad sign!) My connect speed with my Pismo's 56K modem is usually 49,333, but I do get a lot of dropped connections (which I realize may be the fault of my ISP), which is VERY annoying, especially during downloads!

They probably won't help.
Modem scripts normally dictate your connection speed more than anything (they do help with stability, but most are pretty stable).
If you're getting 49000 as it is, chances are, its your ISP and they may not help

"Modem Magic" is absolute, ripoff crap!

The scripts do nothing, and the webmaster is an a$$, running a scam on ignorant Mac people......

Save your $$$ for a game, or something useful.

Agree completely - worthless product, fly-by-night company run by a-holes. I had to stop credit card payment to even get an answer from them. Butt-heads.

http://www.applelinks.com/mooresreviews/mmm.shtml seems to strongly disagree with y'all. As does http://www.applelinks.com/articles/2...23132801.shtml
as does http://mactucows.com/preview/139086.html

But don't take professional Apple Software Reviewers word for it. There is a post over at http://macfixit.com that this is being scientifically tested regarding download speeds, dependability, login success percentages, etc. I strongly suspect that the rif-raf above will have problems with this as well ;-)

My request to upgrade from MMM 4.5 to 5.0 took less than 10 minutes to receive a response. The G4 Cube Modem Script in 5.0 is providing: "Your throughput is typical of a connection speed of around 44,000bps" according to the http://members.toast.net/leslie/testpage/testpg56.htm test page.

Is there some technical pearls of wisdom in Mac Apple Sucks spelled backwards?

Your throughput is typical of a connection speed of around 46,000bps
is what i received at the "leslie" test page using Modem Magic 4.5's iMac settings.

There is no DSL or Cable here in the Ozarks. Was getting 28800bps.

Hmmmmmmmmm.......... Why is it, that any time the subject of "Mac Modem Magic" comes up, in any internet forum, the only posts supporting and giving glowing reports, are anonymous, unregistered phantom posters?

Why do we never see support given by known, registered forum members? You know, the helpful Mac people that answer questions on all the other topics here, at MacFixIt, etc.?????? Could it be that "Tracy Turner," the author of "Modem Magic," lerks around the Mac forums, waiting to give anonymous testimony for himself?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm................ Why is that???????????

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm................ Why is that??????????

Why is it that everytime Modem magic or connection speed comes up, the same 1 or 2 individuals start a flame war in the forum. Hmmmmmmm, always anonymous and unreistered. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder ?????????????

Seek Jesus and forgive your enemies. Wonder if this is in anyway related to http://www.macfixit.com/ultimate/For...ML/003304.html ?????????

I wonder if ????? is lerk, also known as John Hancock? Why does John Hancock have to post anonymously? Why does John Hancock ignore Software Reviews like:
http://mactucows.com/preview/139086.html
http://www.applelinks.com/mooresviews/mmm.shtml

or dispute their validity.

This could also be watchenman. The same 1-2 people keep libeling this Modem Magic. The posts llok a lot like all of the posts at macnn and macfixit recommending Modem Puppet Show....

Get a life....

There have recently been a lot of posts about Modem Magic 5.0 http://macntosh.com/macara50.html

The posts at macfixit.com and macnn.com have had both glowing endorsements and detractors. The detractors have been unregistered flamers without any redeeming technical data. There were some unsubstantiated statements calling this product a grand hoax.

There were some people belittling the authors lack of telephonic tech support, the website, etc. The author sells Third-Party Modem Drivers, not telephonic tech support nor web pages.

There were also many people posting endorsements who were intensely flamed for expressing these views, often with profanity.

There are now reviews on this suite of third party modem drivers at: http://www.applelinks.com/mooresviews/mmm.shtml http://mac.tucows.com/preview/139086.html

A Mac Users Group (MUG) 6 states large likes Modem Magic 5.0 so well, they put up their own page about it at: http://buxmontmug.org/modem

Some of the National MUGs are also putting up endorsements. It would be doubtful that this Mid-Atlantic area MUG would endorse a hoax to members in 6 States.... It is even more doubtful that the National MUGs would endorse vaporware..... Traditionally, they have built pages like http://buxmontmug.org/modem for venerable products like FreePPP, IPNetRouter, etc.

It would appear the Tri-State MacUsers Group loves Modem Magic so much that they put up their own page about it. Some of the National groups are putting up mirrors of the Tri-State page at http://buxmontmug.org/modem

"Mr. Apploholic":

Interesting that your post #1 was a rather emotional rant against this product, in which you complained of having to "send several e-mails daily."

Now, you give a post complaining about "flame wars," and then a few days later do a lengthy update in support of the product.

Wa'hoppened?

My previous question remains - why are there no recognizable forum members who can vouch for this product? FYI, I'm not flaming the product, but it's the only one I read about that attracts only "unregistered," anonymous support.

hmmmmmmmmm............

The page loaded in 22.526 seconds

Average throughput was 50.5 Kbps (Kilobits per second)

The page loaded in 22.537 seconds

Average throughput was 50.48 Kbps (Kilobits per second)

The page loaded in 22.496000000000002 seconds

Average throughput was 50.57 Kbps (Kilobits per second)

Like I said, who gives a *&^%? This is nearly the low-end of (60K) DSL, but not nearly as costly or problematic.

hmmmmmmmmm............ must be the sound of a drive with bad forks ;-)

??????? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm................ has a point.

Over at http://buxmontmug.org/modem/html/products.html it says:

ModemMagic can bring you up to speed! Increase your connection by 1, 2 and even 3X is some cases!

Since that did not come from someone registered here with 54,928 "Posts", it is invalid. Only people with 54,928 posts here are valid. Wish I, too were independantly wealthy so I could make 54,928 in third-party software at macnn.com

Yes, I see the light, hmmmmmm........... It should have been most obvious to all where you are coming from here. Keeping the flame-thrower under the table is very smart, you fooled us all.

A few points:

1. You can shove the "flamethrower" up your a$$-adum - re-read my comments, and you can see I'm "flaming" no one, nor this product, just pointing out some obvious suspicions!

2. Your "link" is to a webpage put up by the software author, and the claims for incresed speeds are his, not made by any MUG! Criminy! - at least read the page that you give as reference!!!

3. Try not to be so simple-minded, OK? Of course a product can have validity without having some hyper-neurotic-poster giving his support! But you would think that at least one registered forum poster would speak up for this product, if it works! Look through these fora, and find any other software or hardware that doesn't have someone known to the forum "regulars" who can give testimony for a valid product! Not even one!

hmmmmmmmmmm.................

http://buxmontmug.org/modem is a Modem Magic 5.0 page, but I'm sorry, you are wrong. You are no longer attacking your competitor, Modem Puppet Show Man, you are now attacking 6 Mid-Atlantic States Mac Users Groups! So you know better than they? Tsk, Tsk, such venom and arrogance.

Everyone here know about the Modem Puppet Show scam this flamer pulled? http://209.132.73.156/modempuppetshow.gif

Also, I'm proud of my name, it is of Arabic origin. May the winds of Hell blow into your mouth and out of your posterior... Such a stench, you.

????? is only telling part of the story. There were a number of REGISTERED members who liked this product, and ?????, Carpathia, and other UNREGISTERED flamers put so many cuss-words on the pages the moderators removed the pages.

?????, this is not a game. It is patently obvious that you are one of those little kids that plays battle titans 18 hours per day. Did your game software go corrupt? In case you did not notice, these forums are for real life.

I guess you seem to think you are the overlord s-h-i-tbot, come to save the universe from the evil Dr. Modem Magic.....

Hiya!

okay, having downloaded my copy of Modem Magic, I can attest to the fact that web pages load much, much faster.

Still haven't seen any 53 k speeds but I'm at 50.6 reliably which isn't bad.....Stability is better but time will tell.
There are so many scripts on this download that it'll take me a month of Sundays to find out if another one is actually capable of supporting 53 k BUT I recommend paying for the download.....it's easily worth $39.95.

Modem Magic does what the advertising says. My iMac Rev C, with the latest firmware loaded, downloaded the testpage with an average thruput of about 33Kbps via my Earthlink ISP before. Using Modem Magic's iMac internal v.90 modem script it is now consistently 48 Kbps.

Shameless endorcement for modem magic.

Greetings,

I've been annoyed with surfing on my mac because I could never reach the
speeds I did on my Windows machine. I have a G3 Beige Desktop Rev.A with
a 56K internal modem, OS 8.6 and 9.1. I did the firmware upgrade from
apple and assigned the latest script in the modem control panel. I
still often connected at 28K and most of my downloads were between
28-35K.

I installed the modem magic script and connected at 49333 the first
time. I balked at the price ($35), but is the best $35 spent on my mac.
Odd that I couldn't find it at my usual download haunts (macupdate,
versiontracker) but first ran across it at tucows.com. and checked out
their website at http://macntosh.com/macara405.html They have a link
to another website that checks your modem speed. http://mac56ktest.com/
Where I found out that there was nothing wrong with my modem.

The tucows site only allows you to download a 33K version, didn't bother
to download it, because I did occasionally get over 33K. Bit the
bullet, purchased the scripts, Yahoo!!

No, I don't in anyway work for the company, just happy to be able to
surf and download at a higher rate of speed. Hope this helps with
anyone else out there that has had problems connecting, surfing,
downloading at low speeds even though your modem is capable of more.

Mark

Apple has a TIL on this issue: http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n24482

They allude to Modem Magic, I think:

"Q. I found a new ARA modem script on the Internet that claims to make my modem faster, and sure enough, I'm now connecting at 48000 bps every time.

A. Be wary of modem scripts that always report the same initial connection speed or that claim to exploit supposedly hidden features in the modem. When evaluating a new modem script or modem initialization string, base your judgement upon the modem's stability and apply the formula for obtaining the average DTR. A modem script can force a high initial connection speed (or lie about it), but cannot force the modem to sustain that speed without dropping the connection. It is of little benefit to have a fast but unreliable connection, or one that always starts fast before slowing down dramatically."
