I'm in the process of doing an erase and install because I'm giving my old ibook to someone. So that they can put all their info in, and what point to I stop the process and let them take over...probably sometime during the registration process, but how do I turn the ibook off safely and let the new owner start from there?

Thanks!

I'd do a Zero All Data so you're sure to wipe any confidential information of yours from the drive. Then I'd probably just install OS X on it and shut down instead of rebooting so they'll boot right into the Setup Assistant.

Make sure to give them the OS discs as well - it annoys me when I see someone who needs to reinstall their OS but can't because someone sold them the machine with the OS on it but not with the install discs.

I don't think the installer gives you an option to shut down instead of reboot. The good news, however, is that as soon as you get to the Setup Assistant, hitting cmd-Q will bring up a dialog warning you that you must either continue the setup or immediately shut down. Choose shut down, and the next boot should take you to the Setup Assistant again.

^ Well, the important thing to remember is that we are smarter than some stupid machine.

It doesn't matter if the installer will reboot instead of shut down - you can simply boot into OpenFirmware and execute the shut-down command.

Just a side note: I'm pretty sure that you're actually REQUIRED to keep the original CDs that came with the computer with it at all times. That includes when you sell it. People don't follow that rule, of course, but as I recall, and IANAL, something in the licensing requires that the CDs/System Discs and the computer are maintained as a package. They aren't to be sold separately.

So yeah, not saying that you were planning that, I was just passing along what I've heard. I might be wrong.

legally true, and also, any transfer of ownership MUST be done in writing, with notice to the company that authored the s/w.....remember, you don't OWN the s/w itself, only the rights to use it!

but since when are things done in a legally-correct manner in the computer world.........
Personally I find it hilarious that you have the hots for my gramma. Especially seeins how she is 3x your age, and makes your Brittney-Spears-wannabe 30-something wife look like a rag doll who went thru WWIII with a burning stick of dynamite up her a** :)
