Just saw a blurb on the news stating that some homeless might be actually terrorists in disquise as homeless to case out various public targets. More to follow unless someone posts a follow up to this.

Is this just a way to get rid of the homeless in afluent areas? Or is it a legitimate story?
I know, this is almost a Cody Dawg Blawg....

Well it would make sense. No one pays any attention to the homeless, so it would be the perfect cover for someone who wanted to hide themself in plain sight.

On the other hand the media was also all up in arms about how Al Quaida was using steganography to broadcast their plans through eBay auctions. A rumor which turned out to be exactly that.

I also heard reports of terrorists who make themselves look pregnant to carry bombs. I urge everyone to look over anyone pregnant and just to be sure give them a punch in the stomach.

Although I suppose it's theoretically possible, it doesn't seem likely. The 9/11 attackers, at least, seemed to have developed quite a taste for "living large", and it makes a twisted kind of sense. If you're about to do something that's automatically going to get you into Paradise no matter what else you do, why not have a little fun with your new (albeit temporary) immunity from morality?

It would be useful, though. There are many homeless people in all areas of most cities, and so they could hide the proverbial tree among the forest. I wouldn't put it past them to consider using it as a disguise, but I don't think they'd actually use it. They'd consider it too distasteful.

You mean how did they disprove the steganography claim? Well, they haven't <em>disproved</em> it per se, but they've found exactly zero evidence that it's true. There are tools to detect steganographically hidden data, and they've turned up exactly nothing. Most likely the whole thing was started by someone realizing that it was possible and pointing it out to a reporter friend who then decided to write a story about it. From there it just ballooned out as people, as they often do, took things completely out of context and entirely missed the point.

Unless the story you saw about the homeless provided some real evidence that it's actually going on, I'd say it's likely this is a similar thing.

I've seen spy movies and tv shows where FBI and CIA agents pose as homeless in order to stake out buildings and people. Al Qaeda may have gotten the idea from there.

Do you think it's possible that intelligence gathering agencies other than Al Qaeda employ this technique? Is it ok for some to do this and not others?

Al Qaeda is a bad organization, but if you're going to criticize a tactic employed by them, you'd better be prepared to face the possibility that the "good guys" are using similar tactics.

I've seen no evidence of yet about the homeless. I think it is just speculation and a reaction to London. New York is putting thousands of cameras up in public locations. Maybe one will be caught on tape with his cell phone camera.

Let's see... homeless people are smelly, unsavory, irritating, uncouth members of society, which us civilized middle-class folk don't like to have messing up our morning jog with the iPod. An astute politician would be capable of looking around and seeing:

1. A powerless group, unable to retaliate politically.
2. A lovely scapegoat which, when vilified, will give the impression of someone doing something tangible about terrorism.
3. Those unsightly reminders that we've got unfinished business here in our cities-- *ahem* nuisances-- off the street.

It's a win, win, win however you slice it.

Unless, you suddenly find yourself held incommunicado, with no charges, no date for a hearing, no lawyer, and only "secret" evidence used to keep you in this state indefinitely, maybe for the rest of your miserable life, simply because you drank and gambled too much and wound up sleeping under a bridge. You might be right, but in my opinion this is besides the point. To me, the strongest argument is that we can't live in fear of our neighbor and let fear and paranoia run amuck. If terrorists do disguise themselves as the homeless there is little we can (or should) do. There is no way to identify terrorists, just like there was no way to identify witches (remember the witch hunts?)
