A few people asked me, and I have no clue:
The mother of a good pal of mine passed away from cancer.
A few friends were planning to go to a viewing/wake...
Appropriate attire for friends of a son?
Some say Tie is too much (just dress pants, and a nice shirt), some say it's mandatory.
IMHO, it doesn't matter to much. Tie mandatory for funeral, wake/viewing is a bit more casual (though not street clothing).
Just curious. Is there a right answer?
Sidenote: I know clown pants, and a bra aren't appropriate for a guy.
Just curious what everyone considers the norm for such an event.
A broad answer is always more interesting than asking 1 or two people.
So I bring it to the forum, more out of curiousity, than actual question.

You can always take a tie off. The Hawaiian shirt you're stuck with.

I think I'm leaning towards a good pair (pair meaning 1) of pants (black), and a dark button-down shirt.

I don't think you could overdress for the occassion (unless you pull out a tux).
A sportscoat/tie/pants and you can't be underdressed.
I've been to a few where a long sleeve dress shirt /tie with nice pants were the norm.
I guess it depends where you live and what everyone is used to.

A tux is certainly too much.
One of the advantages to men's formalwear is its modularity; pieces can be added and removed as necessary to make it more or less formal. It's a shame that women's formalwear doesn't often work that way. I think a whole lot of people would be happier -and a whole lot of bank accounts would be larger - if it did.
Ahem. I'd recommend dark pants, a basic dress shirt, and a dark jacket and tie. You can remove the jacket and tie if they prove to be too much, but I doubt they will be. You can't remove the shirt and tie, but you won't look overdressed in them.

I agree that it's usually appropriate to wear dark pants, a nice dress shirt, tie and a jacket! A decorative shirt or a tux would definitely not be appropriate!

being a bit overdressed (ie, if youre wearing a suit/jacket and noone else is) will stand out alot less than if youre the only one there in a polo shirt.
that said, i think its only appropriate to wear a nice jacket (a dark color), with a white dress shirt and a nice tie.

Just wear a suit. You can't go wrong with a suit.
