A good geek oriented article <a href="http://www.wired.com/news/medtech/0,1286,64631,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_5">here</a>
This isn't the first to report the shift, several other polls and media outlets have documented it as well, but this is a pretty easy read to put it all together.

Hopefully Bush is too dumb to change his mind before the debates.
I want to see him get hammered for his decisions on this issue.

Since Reagan passed away he's starting to get heat on this issue from within his own party.

This guy wants to amend the constitution to ban gay marriages. He's not going to change his mind on stemcell research... you know, killing babies and everything.

What a load of crap that poll was.
"Should this research be allowed?" is the question asked. Unfortunately, that's the wrong question. The research is allowed, and the US under Bush has even kicked in some cash.
The real question should have been: "Do you want federal funds to be spent on embryonic stem cell lines developed after August 2001?"
I love how they (like many stem cell supporters) throw the "it can cure Alzheimers" preface out there. It's like the entire stem cell posse covers their ears and eyes when stuff like this comes out...
... the infrequently voiced reality, stem cell experts confess, is that, of all the diseases that may someday be cured by embryonic stem cell treatments, Alzheimer's is among the least likely to benefit.
But given the lack of any serious suggestion that stem cells themselves have practical potential to treat Alzheimer's, the Reagan-inspired tidal wave of enthusiasm stands as an example of how easily a modest line of scientific inquiry can grow in the public mind to mythological proportions.
It is a distortion that some admit is not being aggressively corrected by scientists.

Well, yeah, because the scientists want to feed off the government trough just like anyone else.
Next week we'll hear that it could cure global warming!

Not another stem cell research thread
No. If you're so eager to do research, go do it on people that won't be destroyed after it.

What to do with stem cells is a man's choice.

Actually there's some research being done in Asia that's quite contradictory to that.
In the US the research done has been focused more on spinal damage. Partial reasoning being that's what donors are paying for. Since Christopher Reeves, there has been quite a bit of research in the field. And actually some decent advances. Ends up they repair more than we thought... just not enough. What's needed is something to complete the process (hence the reason they are looking so closely at stem cells).
