you know the "more info" button at the bottom of the dialog box in the "about this mac" window? well, i just noticed that mine is greyed out for some reason. nothing has changed since the last time i looked at the button. does anyone have any idea on how to get access back? it is greyed out both on my regular admin account and my root user account. thanks.

I have a similar problem on my old B&W G3, running a completely current install of Panther. The button is still there, as is the Software Update command in the Apple menu, but if I choose that command, or press Software Update in the "About this Mac" window, nothing happens. Software Update still works fine when run from System Preferences, and it checks automatically just fine as well.
It's not been a big enough problem to make me look into it, though, so I have no idea what the cause or fix is.

Huh, it could be looking up System Profiler by the creator code and/or bundle ID and failing for some reason.
Have you tried deleting the LaunchServices caches, then rebooting and trying it again?
