Christmas morning, I pulled out my Newton to show my mom. When I turned it on, instead of the usual splash screen, the pad was black and a series of "cookie-bite" sun images moved across the screen. After that, a normal startup finished, and it wouldn't do it again. A solar eclipse on Christmas 2000 is special enough to tie an egg to... Anybody else confirm this egg?

yup its a well known egg in fact... it has the solar eclipses for the next 20 years programmed into it and it'll show the simulation of the eclipse each day there is one.

Yup, but only on the Newton OS 2.0(MP120/MP130 with the 2.0 OS). Can't remember if there's a hack for the OS 2.1's???

According to Walter Smith, this Easter Egg will work thru the 21st century.

BTW, anyone has a fast MP2100 to run for several hours in order to crack the Card's Name Hack?
The MP120 is a little bit too slow (and I need it for development).

Get the package at ftp://ftp.kallisys.com/newton/Utils/CrackEasterEgg.pkg, and let it run.
I suppose that the text to crack is only made of letters and spaces.

I used the Fork technology so that the machine remains a little bit usable. However, the package remains untested, and of course, you use it at your own risk. First cracker wins a bubblegum.
(I've just started the MP120).

You'll have to change the sleep setting as the machine will go to sleep with that technique.

I noticed that there is a bug. Don't close the view, or you'll get an error. And also something else, but I can't remember. ;-)

Currently, the MP120 has tested "bk qa". I may need to stop it if I finally compile the ATA Support with the new transaction engine (I'll have to debug it).

I think that if I hadn't used the fork's trick, it would go faster, but well, this way, you can still do something with the Newton. And the fork's trick is probably much faster than an idler, and it doesn't show the busy bulb.
