Just wondering if anyone with the same machine as me (combo 15inch 1Ghz/256MB Albook) has tried to playback the Matrix Revolutions trailer thats encoded in 1024 resolution.

I tried to play this trailer back, and it was jerky, very jerky. My friend who has a 1Ghz TiBook with 512MB ram has absolutely no problems with this trailer, even in fullscreen. Ditto goes for my other friend running an 800Mhz Duron laptop with 512.

Im thinking its my memory. I checked my processor viewer (and top), and Im sitting at a consisten 200-250Mb memory usage. Even when I have all my other applications off.

Has anyone else has this experience? I think Apple should ship all its machine with at least 512, or 384 if thats cheaper. My sister's iBook was unusable with 128, and I dropped an additional 256 in. It suddenly went from very slow, to very fast.

Comments?

Yep. OS X *LOVES* RAM, the more, the better. 256MB in a PB is definitely too low, pop at least a 512MB stick in there to up it to 768MB, or 1GIG if you've got the cash. You'd be amazed at the diff.

I just ordered a 15Al with a 1Gb stick and have another slot open... would adding another 512 make a noticeable diff of common OS tasks, or only with programs with large files (photoshop, etc)?

I've had problems with one of the Matrix Revolutions trailers playing on full screen under QT player version 6.3. Would play well in the default size, but not when the size was altered/doubled. This is on a 1.25GHz 15"AluBook.

Jerky, as you said. And I think this has been mentioned on the web sites as well.

It does play 100% ok using VLC though. So I put it down to a problem with QT Player, or something or other. Haven't tried 6.4. Or maybe a poorly compressed trailer?

Try setting the processor to Highest instead of Automatic or Reduced. The 1024-width trailer stutters in a couple of places on my 15" albook otherwise.

wow man, that totally did the trick!!

I was wondering what was causing my powerbook to seem a lot slower than it should be. I've never had a problem playing a DVD, but other things slowed down for some reason.

Oddly enough, I should have known this. Back when I had a Wallstreet G3, I needed every trick in the book to have OSX run smoothly.

How quickly we forget..., but I wish it had OSX defaulted to max performance when the device is plugged in.

Thanks for the help. Ill still do the memory upgrade, but it seems that my problem isnt so bad as to merit its immediate purchase
