Read this on Just Another iPhone Blog I think. Tried it myself and it works, the speed increase is significant for application loading and smoothness. Obviously, you'll need to not use Spotlight to make use of this.

Settings > General > Home Button > Spotlight Search > uncheck 'em. You'll still be able to search Safari and Wikipedia from Spotlight.
