I've got an iBook 500 (G3, white) that came with OS 9.1 and OS X 10.0.4. Is there somewhere I can download the 10.1 update? I've not been able to get the right combination of keywords in Google or Apple's download site to find it. Any linkage would be appreciated, because I really don't want to go out and buy one, because my local apple retailer doesn't have one. Thanks in advance.

The 10.1 update was distributed on CD. It isn't available from Apple as a download.

If you can, put a 512MB RAM module in that thing, and go ahead and get 10.3. Don't even waste your time with 10.1.

Alright, looks like I'll skip 10.1...can't even try it if it's not for download...I've already got 512 in it, for a total of 576, and I do have a 10.3 disc already, though I can't use it legally. Can I get a license for less than buying the CD? I don't need a family pack; I just have two machines and one is already legal.

No.

If you're actually gonna be buying a second license, though (and I commend you for your integrity), it might be an idea to wait another two or three months and go straight to Tiger (10.4) when it's released.

Does the machine have a DVD-ROM drive? Tiger may be a problem without a DVD-ROM drive.

No, it's a CD-ROM, though I do have an external DVD-RW I could use to install if I get it on DVD. However, if I get Tiger, it'll be for my Power Mac not for the iBook.

Hey, I had an idea...once I get Tiger, can I legally use my retail Panther on the iBook?

If you purchased Panther, the license states that it can be installed and used on one machine. Naturally, that would include transferring this license to another machine.

So: yes.

You might want to do some checking around to see if you can install with an external DVD. My old iBook wouldn't allow for it. I'm sure there are ways around it though.
