Edit: A coworker just pulled up the CNN video and this thing hauling ass and rocking like mad. That kid has to be ****ing terrified.

Edit 2: How do they even know he's in the balloon? What if he hid when he saw it floating away?

With a ~5,000 feet base, or 3,000 feet above ground level.

I'm the only one at the office that thinks this would be fun (and doesn't think this kid is going to die), but then, I've wanted to travel by hot air balloon for a while now.

In response to the thread title, this has been a nightmare for me. I wrote a novel that was too close to the news reports and I really hope that the kid is hiding out, afraid of being busted for losing dad's toy. Strange how I can feel guilty about something I didn't cause.

If I remember Mythbusters right there wouldn't be enough lift on a balloon that size to lift a 6 year old. Hope that is correct.

A lot of people are joking about this, including the newscasters on CNN, but if a 6 year old fell to his death, then, yeah... uh, yeah...

The state police better send them a comprehensive bill that includes time wasted on interviews by various law enforcement officers, gasonline, and per-mile charges for the patrol cars and officers.

BBC News - US balloon boy parents are given jail sentences

Richard Heene will be allowed to serve 60 days of his 90-day sentence on release, allowing him to work as a construction contractor during the day, while spending the night in jail.
He will start his sentence on 11 January 2010.
Mayumi Heene will begin her sentence after her husband's to ensure their children are still cared for.
She will be allowed to report to jail on two days a week, return home at night, and serve the sentence through jail-supervised community service.
The judge also ruled that her husband must serve 100 hours of community service and write a letter of apology to the community and public service agencies which helped search for his son.
The couple have already been ordered to pay $42,000 (£26,000) in restitution for the emergency services' rescue efforts.
