MacRumors, as usual, has some very deep insight:

No further information is provided, but there is a clear implication that the iPhone is coming this Monday (December 18th). [emphasis mine]

Don't you think invitations would have been sent out for a special "event?" I really doubt Apple would just release something as long awaited as the iPhone by posting it up on their website.

But, which Monday are they referring to?

I'd say no, because it seems a little late for the holiday season.

That just makes no sense at all. There's been no Apple special event invite to the press and, for Apple to enter into a new market like cell phones, I think they'd want coverage.

And, as Dakar point out, it's a bit late for the holiday season. Most people already have their holiday shopping done. And most people's wallets are probably empty from that to drop several hundred more on an Apple iPhone. (Especially if they've bought iPods already as Christmas gifts.)

Monday is not a very Appley day. Don't they normally hold events on Tuesdays? I thought that was one of there trademarks.

I think I read the last time Gizmodo did this, it turned out to be a TiVo product and not Apple. I doubt that Apple would do it on a Monday to. Kevin is right. Tuesday is an Appley day.

It has nothing to do with Monday or Tuesday, it's false because, as Kerrigan and others have mentioned, no special event has been announced.

3 points already made in this thread prove that this won't happen on Monday. No special event, late in the holiday season, and being on a Monday. Why would Apple stray from their usual process for launching new products for something as highly anticipated as the iPhone?

But hell, if it goes against all logic and Apple actually does introduce it on Monday, I'll be happy. I can't wait to see this thing.

Gizmodo says the iPhone will merely be announced, not ready for sale.

It will absolutely be released on Monday. Why? Because I'm getting a new phone tomorrow, and someone hates me.

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

I also think that it will be a GSM phone.

I am glad I bought my video/camera capable GSM phone and my video iPod when I did. Otherwise I would have been waiting forever.

My current phone is halfway busted, so I'm waiting to see if I should shell out the $50 insurance deductible for another one or splurge for the iPhone (if it's on verizon).

NOTHING Apple comes out with will have the panache of the name iPhone. This category was to be defined by Apple. We did not know what behind the scenes discussions Apple and Cisco may have had. This "iphone" will now be marketed by whom? This is a sad, sad day.

Why is it a sad day? iPhone is gimmicky sounding name, much like iTV which isn't being used by Apple either.

I am happy. The iPhone is a lame name and we all know it. Better it be something more akin to the iPod.

Wow.

The linksys has no browser, so you can't use it at hotspots that require browser auth/agreement to terms.

It also requires DHCP, so you can't enter an IP if needed.

Way to limit usefulness.

so then...what will Apple's phone be called?

From all accounts, it's as much an iPod as a phone...so maybe just iPod Phone?

Maybe something original?

Five years ago, I remember my Mac-using friends and I thinking, "What the hell is an iPod?"

There's one way Apple could revolutionise the mobile phone - get rid of those incomprehensible flashing lights. Does anyone actually use them? My Sony Ericsson has a little green light on the top that appears to flash differently depending on various things that I haven't got the inclination to look up in the manual, wherever that is. It flashes all the time just to indicate the phone is switched on - if I am carrying my mobile phone it will be on all the time. Also, rather than waiting the 2-3 seconds between flashes to see if what the light's doing, I just look at the front to see if it's on. Anyway, rant over.

Somehow I think that would be slightly less than revolutionary.
