to cut that wire you'd need a ladder and for all the neighbors to be not paying attention. Or if you're on tv, a fake Verizon van and coverall.

But still, the only one who prob really needs to worry about a burgler that smart is Capt Tightpants. And he prob has motion detector laser cannons.

People motivated to be smart: good burglars, vindictive ex's.

Most crime committed by: dumbass kids, meth addicts.

In my neighborhood people will break into parked cars, but it's usually not breaking, because the cars are unlocked. Crime of opportunity.

The main point I'm making is "they'd need to know how to do X" isn't the best argument, since in this case one can learn how to do X in less than 10 seconds.

I've maybe considered doing something along these lines, and would recommend the somewhat counter-intuitive scheme of wearing a hi-vis vest while doing it.

Probably along with a hoodie, and a hard-hat over it.

Let's not venture into science-fiction territory. They're laser-guided cannons.

You could use a pair of those long-handled branch loppers to cut a high phone wire.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I mean, yeah, one can cut the line to the house - which likely involves a ladder or other specialized branch-cutting equipment, in the middle of an urban area. In my case it just happens that one of the cameras follows the incoming wire straight to the main line, so you'd trigger the motion alarm before cutting that line. Or you could do the phone cabinet thing, which likely involves even more specialized knowledge, planning and level of detection risk.

Short of said laser-guided cannons, every residential house is going to face this problem: any professional thief could gain entry quite quickly. The thing is, most of them are off raiding some rich person's jewelry chest or expensive art galleries. The payoff can't be there for regular homes. So if you have cameras or better-than-average locks or chains, you're probably hanging high enough to be safe fruit.

You can lop the cable anywhere between your house and the box.

Was somewhere just now. Guy had at least five small yappers guarding his place. Any burglar wouldn't get within ten feet without waking the people inside. And one of these yappers will bite also. They probably each weighed eight pounds. It I wouldn't mess with five of them.
