The fan on the front speaker / fan assembly recently started going full throttle. (Unless the computer is sleeping or off) The hardware test doesn't find any problems, so I pulled the whole speaker / fan assembly out of the case. Problem solved? I have external speakers and I don't plan on ever using the PCI slots. Are there any known problems with keeping this setup?

I've also read that this fan's speed is controlled by the amount of PCI cards installed and not temperature. Is this true?

I would appreciate any input,

-Dave

10.3.8 caused a bunch of fan problems. Try setting your processor performance to "highest" and see if that helps. I don't think I'd leave the fan out.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I've tried the automatic / highest setting trick with no effect. I think that only helps out folks with all the fans revving. (Only the one fan revs on mine)

As far as the update goes, I already had 10.3.8 installed before the problem happened. I'm not as concerned about why it happened; I'm just looking for a specific reason this fan needs to be working. It was by far the loudest fan in the case to begin with, so I like having it out, but I don't want to damage my $2000 computer.

Thanks,

-Dave
