Tapping and holding the "hide keyboard" key gives you the option for a split keyboard.

Even easier, just drag the keyboard off the bottom of the screen using that "thumb".

Great tips and information in a nutshell! You'd really need these besides the iPad manual. I think some in here aren't included in the manual but learnt through navigation, stuffs like that. Very useful to those current iPad owners/users and soon to be iPad users. Kudos to all!

6) Hold down…
xxa) the period key on the symbol keyboard to type a single-character ellipsis (“…”)
xxb) apostrophe or double-quote key to get typographic variants (including guillemets)
xxc) 0 to get the degree symbol
xxd) hyphen to get em dash (but no en dash!) or bullet

tried again and again, finally done!
