Don't know how those permissions would have gotten changed so I guess you're right.

But I still don't know how or why this all started with a kernel panic during a Spotlight search. I had to get Disk Warrior to fix directory corruption, possibly caused by me turning it off when it seemed to stick at the loading screen on the next reboot. I have no panic.log for it, I only have one from February. Oh well.

Isn't it a shame you can't virtualize Leopard in any way, I keep building virtual machines to test Windows related things, saves having to put a 2nd PC together.

Apparently Leopard Server can be installed in VMWare, although it doesn't say anything about Client:

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about that.

It's a bit expensive to buy VMWare/Fusion and then Leopard server, unless you have a use for it.

Being that 4294967294 = FFFF FFFE = -2 (as Charles noted),
and that the uid and gid for nobody is -2... it seems like the
problem here must indeed be the fault of nobody.

[somehow]

Anyway, I'm glad it all worked out!

FWIW, here's what the plist for nobody should read like:
$ dscl . -read /Users/nobody
AppleMetaNodeLocation: /Local/Default
NFSHomeDirectory: /var/empty
Password: *
PrimaryGroupID: -2
RealName: Unprivileged User
RecordName: nobody
RecordType: dsRecTypeStandard:Users
UniqueID: -2
UserShell: /usr/bin/false
-HI-

Huh, you're right, the UID for nobody is -2, which is kind of dumb since uid_t is defined to be an unsigned value on Darwin.

Apparently it can also be done with QEMU:

I am having the permanent "Estimating indexing time" with spotlight, when I remove any of my RAID partitions from the privacy tab, in this case LF Pro. I've let it run for 3-4 days, and notice that the .Spotlight-V100 directory on the drive stops increasing in size at about 240.83MB. Following the thread, I don't have the same results. Activity Monitor does show mdworker process running, two of them actually.

This command sudo fs_usage -f filesys mds mdworker mdimport gave me the below output

Code:
10:16:46.089 fcntl F=5 <PATHPKG_CHECK> 0.000011 mds 10:16:46.089 fcntl F=5 <PATHPKG_CHECK> 0.000002 mds 10:16:46.089 fcntl F=5 <PATHPKG_CHECK> 0.000003 mds 10:16:46.089 fcntl F=5 <PATHPKG_CHECK> 0.000002 mds 10:16:46.089 fcntl F=5 <PATHPKG_CHECK> 0.000008 mds 10:16:56.906 open F=68 (R_____) 0.000044 W mds 10:16:56.906 fcntl F=68 <GETPATH> 0.000005 mds 10:16:56.906 close F=68 0.000012 mds 10:16:56.907 open F=68 (R_____) /Volumes/Scratch Disk 0.000034 mds 10:16:56.907 fcntl F=68 <GETPATH> 0.000003 mds 10:16:56.907 close F=68 0.000007 mds 10:16:56.907 open [ 2] (R_____) /Volumes/Scratch Disk/Backups.backupdb 0.000008 mds 10:16:56.907 open [ 2] (R_____) /Volumes/Storage Archive/Backups.backupdb 0.000008 mds 10:16:56.907 open F=68 (R_____) /Volumes/Storage Archive 0.000009 mds 10:16:56.907 fcntl F=68 <GETPATH> 0.000003 mds 10:16:56.907 close F=68 0.000005 mds 10:16:56.908 open F=68 (R_____) /Volumes/LF Pro 0.000010 mds 10:16:56.908 fcntl F=68 <GETPATH> 0.000003 mds 10:16:56.908 close F=68 0.000004 mds 10:16:56.908 open F=68 (R_____) /Volumes/Resources 0.000055 W mds 10:16:56.908 fcntl F=68 <GETPATH> 0.000004 mds 10:16:56.908 close F=68 0.000010 mds 10:16:56.909 open F=68 (R_____) /Volumes/Audio Instruments 0.000013 mds 10:16:56.909 fcntl F=68 <GETPATH> 0.000003 mds 10:16:56.909 close F=68 0.000004 mds 10:16:56.909 open F=68 (R_____) /Volumes/DiskWarrior 0.000010 mds 10:16:56.909 fcntl F=68 <GETPATH> 0.000003 mds 10:16:56.909 close F=68 0.000004 mds 10:16:59.315 read F=4 B=0x187 13.225896 W mds 10:16:59.373 read F=4 B=0x57 0.057847 W mds 10:16:59.415 read F=4 B=0x12a 0.041813 W mds

One of the mdworker processes is running as my user, and the other as _spotlight.
