I guess it depends on the type of apocalypse, but suppose 99.5% of humanity died and you could gather a small tribe together, where would be the best / safest place to live?

I'm guessing somewhere in the southern hemisphere, but my knowledge of geography is rather limited. I would want to avoid nuclear and other dangerous waste deposits, and dangerous weapons storage facilities. A geologically stable place. A non flood / hurricane prone area. A place where agriculture would be sustainable.

Suggestions... and why?

Depends on the type of apocalypse, certainly. Asteroid/tsunami would rule out coastal or island places.

Nukes would rule out populated areas.

Middle america is already a dustbowl with either flooding or tornados.

I'd say Montana, snow is better than flooding. A million cultists can't be wrong.

The intermountain region of the U.S. is geologically stable place and you'd be able to have a farm there. You'd want to stay away from former population centers and have a lot of weapons. Much of the surviving population would eventually be knocking on your door when the last of the abandoned supermarket canned food goes bad.

I'd go for somewhere around Lake Geneva. Mountains nearby. Fresh water + ability to fish in the lake. Towards the south west of the lake it starts to flatten and there's lots of agriculture there now.

Only issue is this : if the apocalypse was started by the LHC, then you'd want to be as far away as possible from Lake Geneva.

Look to history, where did early man thrive? Nile, Yangzte, Tigris/Euphrates, etc.

Coastal flooding isn't as bad as it sounds, because you can just relocate upshore. No property ownership issues when everyone else is dead. But you do need fresh water, and that means a river. Rivers are also good for low-tech renewable energy.

You generally want to avoid actual tropical climates because of disease. Humans are good enough at dealing with cold, but dealing with tropical diseases is something we have significant trouble with even using the most modern technology; not something you want to volunteer for if you're "roughing it."

Localized disease is not something I had considered. I was thinking southern hemisphere because of the lesser development ... but moving very far might be a big mistake.

Mississippi...lots of water, trees (for shelter and warmth), very rich delta region and lots of wildlife. Plus the remaining population wouldn't want to visit it because no one wants to visit it now.

I'd say raid a library or bookstore for every possible survival book you can find and go in the opposite direction of the crowd. The last place you want to be is somewhere that you have to compete with other humans for survival (there's always someone bigger and badder). Most people will head south for the warmth ... I'd head somewhere with cold winters. A bonus would be somewhere with well developed solar, hydro or wind powered infrastructure.

Honestly, I'd probably stay in the Canadian prairies.

Depends on what kind of apocalypse we're talking about. If they have time to take the nuke plants offline then I'll be staying put. If NM1 & 2, Fitzpatrick, and Ginna cook off, or even just one of them, then the area between you and I, and pretty much all of Lake Ontario, will not be a good place to be holed up for the apocalypse. Personally I would head south where the growing seasons are longer. A man's gotta eat, and you know how the winters can be in these parts.

Nuclear fallout isn't all that bad. You won't have to worry about using electricity in the evening when you glow in the dark, and the extra limbs could come in handy!

Well, it's not salt water, but I'd hardly call it "fresh." I think I'd rather live by the ocean and run a desalination system than drink the water from the Great Lakes.
