I was completely unfamiliar with this until my friend's uncle (he owns a small Cessna) decided to scare the crap out of us.

Absolutely no reason for them to be in zero-g for that long during a stall recovery. Really no reason for them to be zero-g in a stall recovery at all. I assume they're just playing around.

Only time I held a dive like that for that long was to grab something I couldn't reach in the back seat.
