Microsoft is planning to bring its Cortana voice-powered personal assistant service to iOS, and is looking for a pool of iOS users to help the company beta-test the technology. The company is now accepting signups in the US and China from "Windows Insiders," or those who helped beta-test Windows 10, and will limit the number of people who can get early releases of the software. Microsoft has been testing Cortana for iOS for six months already, and there is no known release date for a final version.

"We want help from our Windows Insiders to make sure she's a great personal assistant on iOS too," said the company. "We're looking for a limited number of people to get their hands on an early version of the app." The iOS version will not support the "hey Cortana" feature, at least at first, and Microsoft notes that some other features will also not be available initially. The beta version will support functions such as reminders, calendar event scheduling, and sending emails, but will eventually integrate with Microsoft's Outlook and OneNote iOS apps.

The company expects to get Cortana for iOS out for the public by the end of the year. Users interested in applying for the limited beta program will need to fill out a survey before being allowed to sign up, and will get download links to early versions later this month if accepted.

Is Cortana going to have a kid's mode? That's a big lack of Siri. It only talks to adults.

What useful purpose would this serve?

I'm intrigued about that "kids mode" idea. In what way does Siri "only talk to adults"? Does she use complicated words that require a certain age to comprehend. She sure as f*ck doesn't use swear words, as far as I recall (it's Apple, after all), and she gets pretty cross if you swear at her. Not that I would ever do such a thing.

Seriously, how much more "PG" do you need Siri to get? Or by "kids mode", do you simply mean that Siri would be more condescending? Phrase her answers in nursery rhymes? Instantly send a push notification to a parents' phone when little Johnny asks "Where can I get booze around here?"?
