Command-Shift-3: Screen Shot of the whole screen
Command-Shift-4: Screen Shot of a selectable region (select region with mouse, or press spacebar to take a screenshot of a window)
The screenshot will be saved to the desktop as a PDF.

Or press space bar after, then it would be saved to clipboard

Bzzt, wrong, command-control-shift 3 saves to the clipboard rather than to the desktop (likewise, add control to the other keyboard shortcuts for screenshots to capture to the clipboard)
For the original poster look in System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts for a listing of many of the key combos possible.
Edit: also, if you wish to capture an image of the mouse pointer, you can use the application called Grab in the Applications>Utilities folder

Just open the PDF in preview and choose File>>Export and export it as a jpeg.

How un-Mac-like! For OS X, just drag-n-drop the pdf onto DropJPEG. It will spit out a JPEG replica within a blink of the eye. For OS 9 and older, there is this application "To JPEG". Find them at VT or Macupdate.

I took a couple of pictures of my screen, but they were not saved to my desktop and I cannot find them! Does anyone have a suggestion as to where they may have been saved? What are they called (maybe I can do a file find).
What I am trying to do is capture a frame from a DVD. Unfortunately screen grabs using GRAB are unavailable when using DVD. Any work arounds?

They're called Picture 1, Picture 2, etc.

Check versiontracker.com... they list a few apps that allow you to take screen grabs from DVDs.

Also, if you like. You could get Pixture studio's QuickImageCM and convert the PDF trough the contextual menu.
check it out: http://www.pixture.com/macosx.php
There are also some other nice tools there
