Chill about the whine. I have a MBP with whine. It has come up a total of three times in the last week, and forced me to 1) go to my dashboard 2) open mirror widget 3) close it. Done, no more whine for the rest of the session. There is likely going to be a software fix in the next few weeks.

Yeah, the mirror trick works well. I have to do it every time I boot, but it takes about 5 seconds, so whatever.
btw, just as an experiment, I used the mirror trick one day while taking notes in class on battery - and then didn't do it the next day while doing the same thing (same brightness, no airport, etc.). I had essentially identical battery life both days. I had wondered if the mirror trick forced the processor into a higher setting or done somthing else power-consuming, but so far as I can tell it doesn't.
Hopefully Apple will release some sort of software patch just to spare me opening and closing the mirror widget every day.

mine whistles sometimes... i am not sure if that is the whine... otherwise is quiet as a book.

I received mine less than a week ago and it has the whine - unless something has changed in the last 3 or 4 days I would say that whining MBPs are still shipping.

Well as it seems that new MacBooks are shipping with the whining noise. Are they still shipping with the Buzz from having the LCD anything other than full power or completely off?

I don't have the buzz from the screen (fortunately). I remember my old PC laptop had this and it was really annoying.

My whine seems to come from the left side, near the hardisk, I suppose.
Definitely sounds more like a hardware than a software issue, especially since it is ever-present and not subject to any Dashboard opening or whatever.

You should call Apple and tell them you are not going to buy a MBP until they resolve the whine issue.
If I had known the whine was going to be this bad I would have waited.
Now my "second" MBP is off to Apple to fix the whine, but alas I don't think it will return fixed.

I have a W8612... MBP and I definitely have the whine. It's not been fixed. It comes from the left side right under the screen.
OTOH I don't have the screen buzz (no matter at what brightness level I'm at), so I guess I should be 50% happy.  I'm really hoping Apple will just release a software update that gets rid of the whine w/o the need to manually turn on the iSight. And while they're at it, they might want to fix the network dropping errors for AirPort connections.

I have a W8612 and it does have the whine. Same as Simon, it comes from the left side right under the screen. It's a high pitch frequency noise.

don't know if you've bought one yet but the one I bought the other day has no whine or other issues. the salesperson at the Apple store said the company was aware of the problems and fixed them in the newer machines made in the last few weeks. You need to make sure you are getting the newer computers by checking the serial number. Mine begins with W8611 if that helps.

Younger people are more sensitive to higher frequency noise. So if you are 50 or older, you probably won't hear it.

And just for the record, to be able to even hear the whine you need to
• remove all MP3 playing devices from you ears
• turn off that heavy metal pounding out of your boom box
• go to a ultra-quiet place (no, a bar won't do)
• remove the AC adapter/charger
• open the MBP and let it idle (iSight must be turned off)
If you don't hear anything, chances are extensive use of points 1 and 2 have already done irreparable damage.

Not to ruin anyones party but my new MacBook Pro is perfect except from its whine - and the worst thing is the serial number... W8613
I grew accustomed to this with my old TiBook 667 which had a similar interference type noise, so it is no big deal and I was unsure if this was the 'annoying' noise everyone was talking about. However noticing it disappear when I open Photo Booth confirms it is indeed the same issue.
The fact the noise disappears when iSight is active does not necessarily 'prove conclusively' it is a software issue. However the fact the noise is not present in Windows XP (using BootCamp) does, at least to me. I do wonder why Apple have not fixed this yet though.

i had a Rev A, which i just returned due to screen warping, got a brand New MBP thanks to Apple, no wine at all and there are no heat problems...the Rev A could get pretty hot, this is just as warm as my Grandpas new PowerBook 15", and the new MBP is actually more quiet.

I just received my W8614 MBP this week and it's whining. The whine sounds EXACTLY like my older 1.5Ghz PB made whenever I ran Dreamweaver MX 2004 (never noticed it on any other programs, even DW 8). I could make it go away by putting the processor speed on the lower setting in the Energy Saver prefpane.
Looks like I'll be using the Mirror widget trick, as it runs fine after that.

Pismo going on 6 years plus and still no whine coming from mine, quiet as midnight... oh wait! you're talking about those new 'books! I was thinking hard about getting one but I think I will delay. Could we start a list or something that categorizes:
-serial number
-type of noise
-where it was built (I don't know if it's built in more than one place)
perhaps then everyone could have a better idea of exactly which machines are affected, or if it's just random, luck of the draw.
