I have the original G4 QS 733 model with a Combo drive. However I can't seem to burn 700 meg (and some brands of 650 meg) CDs. I have an external LaCie USB burner that will burn any brand of CD fine but it's only 4x and takes up a USB port...

I was wondering if anyone had similar problems or knew how to fix them. I have attached screenshots of the error occuring on Disk-Copy and Toast 5:

-edit-

The error happens right at the start of the burn: The progress bar appears and moves along 1 unit before stopping, 'finishing' and giving me the error before spitting out the CD. I can even use the CD again in my USB burner since it doesn't seem to have had anything burned onto it at all.

i had that same problem with my DP1ghz once last week, as it turned out the disc image was busted, so it kept giving me errors on the burn (it was a 700 meg CD) i don't know if that helps you any, just thought i'd let you know, maybe it's what you're trying to burn?

Nope, happens no matter what I try to burn - an audio CD, a data CD, a CD image...always gives me that same error. It doesn't matter what speed I set it to either, it makes no difference.

I had the same problem, I used a 700MB cd, and just burned 650MB worth of data instead. They came out pretty good (I tested 3 or 4 cd's), but I kept getting those errors unless I made the cd only hold < 650MB.

They laughed at my Mac, it had no CLI. They laughed at Linux, it had no GUI. I installed MacOS X, and shut them up.

I went out yesterday and bought 700MB Memorex blank CD-R's (note, not the CD-RW's) and they worked just fine.

My Memorex 700MB CD-RW's always bomb when trying to write to them.

first of all, MEMOREX SUCKS @$$!!!
My 12x external sony will make coasters 50% of the time writing to 16x rated memorex media, and 1% of the time to other types of CDRs. If i drop the speed to 8x, i get like 5% coaster with memorex...

With that said, when you have medium errors, try to lower the burning speed a bit and raise the cache a little. See if that helps, if not, then i'm out of ideas...I've been DVD-Burning since half a year ago, and got a few coasters from computer crashes, but that's it, even though i use the cheapest medias ^_^; (upto 85 dvds now...my goal is 150 by end of summer, 250 by this time next year )
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

oh yeah, forgot to add...
ALL 700 meg cds have a max capacity of 702.8MB, and can be over-burned a little more on PCs with appropriate software. (99 minute CD-Rs are the top capacity CDs now, holding 'bout 1GB of data and can do 8x max depending on the burner). Ignoring the directory files, you can fit 702 +_ 0.2 MB on it without a problem. ISO9660 don't have directory files nearly as big...I've actually fitted 702.7MB of data on a cd that way...
If the CD is rated 700MB, use it! but if you are getting errors, even if you have those drives that has "burn-proof" technology or the likes, try to see if you have any luck by dropping the burn speed a little...
(I think 650MB cds hold 651.9 or so...but not sure since i haven't used those since the 300CD mark ^_^; I've done 'bout 1k now, and all of the contents are legal o_O)

e-ghad! I remember those errors now! they all came from the internal iBook combo drive in OS X...
I'm wondering if you get the same error under OS 9...and I always thought my errors were due to that my iBook wasn't on a perfectly flat and level surface when burning...'cuz it seemed to have gone away when i placed it on my table as opposed to my futon ^_^;
If still no luck, call and b1tch to Apple maybe?

I attempted to copy them to another folder to find out some pic files were corrupted, only iPhoto would read them, not preview. What i ended up was 12/20 pics around 10MB. I haven't tried to burn it yet, but i'd rather not make more coasters. I got the error with Titanium Toast 5.1.3 and with the Burn feature in the finder.

&

i refuse to boot up OS 9 to burn a CD, i think it should work. my problems also occured with 700MB disc - i don't know the brand off hand, but they were colored and from Target. either way it sucks and should be fixed.
