I have a network with my Tibook and a Windows machine. On this windows machine a Brother HL1430 laserjet printer is installed. It is shared.

But when I want to add a windows-network printer in Panther, nothing is listed... It searches on the correct network, but doesn't find anything

It didn't work in Jaguar either, but people told me in Panther it would be a breeze... I'm quite disappointed

Anyone who can help?

Transfering all my to-be-printed documents over the network to the windows machine everytime I want to print is alot of hassle

I can't speak for Panther but I'm using a Brother MFC in Jaguar without problems, other than jobs spooling much slower than a direct connection. Have you tried:

1. Using Gimp-Print (not sure about Panther, though)

2. Using the Gimp-Print HP Laserjet II driver

3. Changing the queue name to LPT1.

This is what did it for me.

Not to be obvious or anything, but you never know. You do have printer sharing turned on the PC, right? I am using a Brother 1870N connected to a PC, the network is something of a mess with everything going every which way. The only thing I can think is that you're not sharing it. Hmm, or you don't have an account on the PC. Good Luck

Yes, I turned on printer-sharing

But regarding an account on the pc: is that necessary? And how do you do that: you create an account with the same username as the username on mac? It's windows 98, so I'm not sure whether it is possible to create users anyway...

gimp printer-drivers I haven't looked at, but first I want to have it working the official way.

Oh, I did not know you could even get this to work on Win98. For some reason I thought you had to have 2000 or XP, I don't know this for sure.

Do you need the drive installed in Panther? And are you sure it will work with Win98? That OS is pretty dated, to say the least.

Ok, I finally could add the printer, HOWEVER:

Although I installed the printerdrivers on Panther I cannot pick the right printer from the list. Beneath brother the HL1430 model isn't listed...

Where are the printerdrivers supposed to be installed? I want to check whether the files are written on the HD or not...

So I just set the printer-model to default, but now it's only printing blank pages

*sigh*

I own HL-1440 and wanted to print through Win XP too, but all i got was a page with some weird characters followed by endless blank pages. So I gave up and plug it to the mac whenever I need to print.
