I've just tested a region 1 and region 2 disk in my 1.33 ghz 17" AlBook and they both play fine (no dialogue telling me i need to change the region settings). Is this a feature of 10.3, or is the superdrive multi region?

Weird. I can't think why yours should be any different than mine (in my 1GHz 12") which did ask me about zones for the first disc I put in it.

Does the drive report itself as a UJ816 in the System Profiler?

Usually with RPC2 drives (which all new DVD drives are), the region will lock (in the drive itself) after 4 or so region changes changes. This usually can not be easily changed.

For most drives out there, you can get a firmware patch to make it a RPC1 drive that does not have this restriction.

It may still be possible for manufactures to produce RPC1 firmware, unless there is some law (or something) that requires them to produce RPC2.

Some RPC1 firmware patches for Apple drives and other information can be found here.

I tried that website but they don't have a patch for my drive :/ What worrys me is that my drive is changing regions without me realising and soon it's going to lock without me realising too!

I would stick with using only European discs. Eventually it will lock and it'd be bad if it locked on a Japanese disc or something, rendering all your UK discs useless.

I think that the region code dialog also depends on what software you are using. I think that it only appears with Apple's default DVD player. Not with other software so may be, that could be it. Anyhow let us know what you discover.

use VLC for playing DVD's without having to change zones.

Go to System Preferences > CD's & DVD's > When you insert a video DVD: (change it to "Do Nothing").

Then when you insert a DVD, open VLC and go to File > Open Disc ... and voila.
Enjoy the movie.
