After installing this update, my Mac Pro 8-core now is recognized as "2 x 3 Ghz Unknown" in the About This Mac window. Anyone else experience this?

Try reset the PRAM (press the Command, Option, P, and R keys at startup)....until the third chime.

I didn't pay attention on my Mac Pro at work after the update.

Parameter RAM. The Mac stores some information in this special "non-volatile RAM" like speaker volume, startup disk choice and more.

Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM?
20" iMac C2D/2.4GHz 3GB RAM 10.6.8 (10H549)

You weren't using the computer while the update was being applied, were you?

Because if you were, it's possible you could have been bitten by this bug.

A friend of mine has an 8 core Mac Pro and he doesn't have this problem after applying the Security Update.

I will try running the 10.4.9 combo updater and see if that helps
*edit* It won't let me install the combo update. I'm out of ideas

I may just wait until apple issues a new update and hope it fixes it! It's just a cosmetic thing anyway. It's just bugging me as I'd like to know why it's happening.

As those machines are so new, I'm sure somebody was probably working on the security updater and simply overlooked the new processor. As you said, it's just cosmetic. And I can promise you it will be fixed in the future.

Here is how you can manually fix it:

Caution: You might have to undo this fix when Apple releases their next update.

I was using my MacPro while updating and all's fine on my 4-core MacPro. As a matter of fact, I force-quit the installed after it finished to kill the "Restart or Shutdown" dialog with no ill effects.
