my screen seems to have become unviewable
while starting a new operating system i fiddled with the display operating mode
but now it is far too dark and the more i fiddled with it
the less viewable it became
is there a straightforward way of getting it back to normal?

Some more details would help. That is, what exactly did you change, and why? Also, what OS?
As for a "simple" fix, can't you adjust the brightness level of the monitor? You don't even need the OS to do that. There should be something to control the brightness level on the monitor.

There are dedicated brightness keys on Mac keyboards.
