What type of RAM does the 20th Anniversary Macintosh use? Does it still use the 5 volt or can I use PC66?

I'm pretty sure you have to use either 5 volt or 3.3 volt EDO RAM. It sure costs a lot though (I have a UMAX C600). Something like 150 for 64mb (I think)

You cannot use the pc66 on a TAM. It takes the same RAM as the 4400/5400/6400 I believe it is the 3.3v DIMMs, and yes, it's pretty expensive.

The DIMMS are the 168-pin. EDO are recommended.

The only 168-pin DIMMs I can find are 5 volts, not 3.3. So it is 3.3 or 5? I found some at (save the insults) memorytogo for $130 for 128MB 168 pin EDO @ 5v.

Nevermind. I found the RAM at Coast to Coast (even says for 4400/5400). And they ARE expensive. Sheesh. $250 for 128MBs.

I'll take my chances on eBay. Ouch.

Can they use Error Corection (ECC) RAM? Cuz there's plenty of that on eBay with some unbuffered here and there.

just curious about the TAM. love the look of it but afraid to buy it used on ebay. not sure how expandable it is. it's a beautiful computer. saw it the other day in person and really was wowed.

It's pretty expandable. It can upgrade to a G3 using one of the L2 processor upgrades. I believe sonnet makes them and possibly powerlogix & metabox. I KNOW that sonnets' is TAM compatible, but can't vouch for the others. I've thought about getting a TAM on eBay too, but the price always stops me. I see them gogin for $2000! And this for 5 year old technology. Apple has a 25th Anniversary coming up and seems to be doing good things with its flat-panel displays...maybe we'll see a new TFAM at MWNY...

The TAM uses the same as my 5400, 5v 2k refresh 168-pin DIMMS, and I'm pretty sure it can use either the FPM or EDO. Memory prices have jumped in the past few weeks, too. I've seen several places that say that EDO or FPM won't make any difference, mix and match.

Macgurus has a FAQ on this type of RAM, and I've seen it on Apple's Tech Info Library site as well. Search there and you can get the whole story.

Most 168-pin DIMMS are 4k refresh, and they will register at half of their capacity in the machines that require a 2k refresh.

I stand corrected.

The TAM uses only 5V EDO, as discussed at MacGurus and in the TIL articles listed there. It should use the same RAM as 5500, 6400, and 6500 machines, except that EDO DIMMs are required, and some of the other machines can use fast page mode DIMMs.

MemoryX is a good place to look for RAM, and they'll only sell you the right stuff.

You can only use 5v, 2k refresh, non-FPM memory in your machine. It's expensive now as well.

tamcurious, the TAMs come with an expansion panel and a couple cards. It has support for one PCI and something to stick in the comm slot (ethernet, modem, whatever. Although it comes with an external modem.)

If you wanted to, you can get a 500MHz G3 or G4 upgrade and stick a 32MB Radeon in it.
