My normal grip isn't really a grip. The phone rests on my non-pinky fingers, and I brace it from sliding down with my pinky. This causes the sharp edge of the dock connector socket to rub against it all day.

I could switch to a more "grip-like" grip, but I've found that makes operation with a single thumb more difficult.

That's how I hold mine. But mine's in an Incipio case, so, no pain.

I take it you're an iPhone nudist?

Can you still feel the dock connector with a Bumper?

Maybe it's time to practice safe iPhoning and get better protection?

Well, to be precise, I can feel the hole in the bottom which allows access to the dock connector.

I do like the minimalism of the bumper, but it may be time to look for hole with some rounded edges on it.

Mine doesn't hurt my finger, its in a Cygnett Snaps Duo, a bumper style case similar to the Apple case. It came as a pack of two, I haven't used the second one yet. It's cheaper, has cutouts instead of the built in silver volume buttons, but the cutout edges are rounded off and there's no hard plastic in it. It comes with front and back protector films. The price was cheaper than a single Apple Bumper. For me, it does the job.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Your pinky will not be damaged, but you will get a deformed hand ala Hanson from Scary Movie 2, and when you are ready to sue, Tim Curry I mean Cook will point out that all ads have shown the ergonomic way to type on your smartphone: with 2 hands.

I'm sure there's an Aesop's Fable somewhere about the fingers arguing which is the more important. The thumb rested its case by simply stating that the fingers couldn't get a grip on anything without the thumb.

The pinky trumped that by pointing out how important it was to pick your nose, and every finger stopped arguing after that.

Alas, my pinky still suffers the slings and arrows of a big dock hole.

Just in case your pinky isn't reconciled to eternal suffering, you can get an incipio case at amazon for as little as $10 in various colors, and you can get free freight in a variety of ways.

And if you want something snazzier, here's some suggestions:
