HOLY NECRO, BATMAN.

I'd post a pic of my car, but it's a Hyundai Tuscon. Really, really boring. Also it has an alarmingly increasing rate of mechanical issues lately. I've been avoiding taking it to a mechanic - I'm pretty sure the repairs are going to cost over a grand.

Everything. Check engine light was on for like a week but mysteriously turned off. Oil pressure light keeps coming on sporadically, but I think that's just because I need an oil change. I had all my belts replaced months ago and the steering belt has been squealing ever since. It's gotten progressively worse, too. Then there's a grindy sort of noise when accelerating at low speeds. It's pretty awesome.

The check engine light could be something as simple as a loose gas cap.

If only there were a check check engine light light.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Depending on the car repair shop sometimes they'll do a free code reading and tell you what the check engine light means for you.

Oil pressure light is more worrying though, unless you are nearing the breaking point and getting rid of the car change the darn oil woman! It's only 30 bucks and it could prevent some pretty terrible stuff from happening.

My Aunt has a Tuscon and she has had a ton of problems with it, odd, because everyone I know with Hyundai car have had much better experiences. Good rule of thumb is to stay away from any quasi-SUV-Crossover vehicles, they are complete shite.

I have a code reader, so that's not a problem. If the light comes back, that is...

WRT the oil - I'm just lazy and forget. I also rarely drive more than a few miles since I lost my job, so I forget until I'm on the road. I'm 6k miles in on this change, so I should probably do it soon.

The squealing belt and grindy noise are much more disconcerting. I *really* hope the grindy noise isn't an indicator of an engine or transmission problem.

I've put somewhere around 65,000 miles on this car since I bought it; it's going to turn over 100k soon. I drive rough, too. All in all it's been a pretty reliable car - the only issue I had with it until now was the alternator crapping out, and we replaced that ourselves.

the oil pressure light comes on WHEN THERE IS NO OIL PRESSURE! this is HORRIBLE for the engine!

check the level and add a quart of oil to it, if you dont know how to do this, then take it to a shop.

the squealing is from a loose belt, take it back to the shop that did the work and tell them it squeals after they replaced the belts, they should tighten it for free.

the grinding could be a bunch of things, but get your brakes checked first. most brake places will do a free check, but be ready for a long expensive list of repairs, ignore most of them, but replace the pads, and re-surface the rotors on the end (front or rear) if the brakes end up being the problem.

Last time I took my jeep in to get the brakes checked they wanted to charge me about $400 to remove a couple lock nuts on my steering (tie rod ends) this was the same day that I personally installed the same steering components per the manufacturers directions (which required both lock nuts) SO, dont trust 90% of what a shop says.

6k isn't really that much for a modern car. I'd go 7k between oil changes with my truck, checking the oil periodically of course. Getting into the habit of checking your oil is something everyone should do. At 6k miles if your oil is indeed low or in need of a change it sounds like the car is either burning oil or something else bad.

Or, like with my first car, it just means the engine has such low compression it only generates about 4psi of oil pressure once it warms up...hehe

My pressure light sporadically comes on for a second or two when the oil is just a little low. It's not the end of the world - I'll get around to getting it changed this week. I think.

WRT the belt: already had it adjusted by the place that replaced it (Firestone in Springfield, VA; for anyone in the area NEVER GO THERE EVER), no luck.

There's a mechanic in my area with excellent reviews. I'm going to take it in and have them give me the rundown of what's actually wrong with it. I realize that most shops take advantage of the fact that their customers don't know what they're talking about, but that's life. A lot of computer repair places do the same thing. I know how to fix my own computer. I do not, however, have the time, resources, or facilities to repair my own car.

I'm not so much concerned about going 6k on an oil change, but not checking to make sure you still have enough oil is a huge no-no.

Ounce of prevention, pound of cure and all that. Neglecting your vehicle further with either ruin it for good or end up costing you 10 times more than it should have. Bring it in asap Shif.

In other news I'm cresting over 10k miles on my new KIA. Overall very impressed with the build quality, especially the interior.

I'm obviously biased, but I think the Optima is one of the best looking sedans out there right now.

In other, other news, I got to drive a Prius a few days ago. What a hunk of shit. No pickup, and horrible rear-view situation with the split back window.

Yeah, that Kia Optima is a fine looking car. If it had AWD, I would have definitely went for it - it's a bit better-equiped than the Subaru in the standard configuration of course, so there wasn't much difference in price.

On the other hand, there's a reason the Subaru is like a jolt of pure energy to drive whenever there's some snow down - which there often is this time of year. It's a complete beast in poor conditions for such a little car.

I love the new Optima, had one a few months ago and did 1,400 miles in two weeks. Very, very well built and IMO the 2.4L feels more powerful than the stated 200 hp.

Haha yeah, I'd never heard of that before. On the other hand we don't get it as cold out here - below freezing yes, but generally it hovers around 0 (32?). I suspect Denver is a different beast when it comes to freezing your engine....

4 Subarus, waded through lots of snow in Maine, never lost a timing belt except on a hot summer night in july going 80 down 495.

That was fun.

It wasn't the cold, I've driven with no issues as cold as -17°. It's that snow got into the engine compartment because I was missing a dirt/dust shield underneath the car and then froze around the motor. When I opened the hood the next morning after I tried to start, there was a good 4-6" of ice/snow mix on 3 out of 4 sides of the motor.

I know in the other thread I said I don't have anything photographically to add to car photos.

There is one thing. The ultra-long lens 3/4 shot looks like shit. This is from someone who almost always goes for a long lens.

Stop doing that, ad people.

After driving 350 miles to Charlotte, NC with the oil pressure light going on and off the entire trip, I finally got my oil changed.

Our 12 year old Saab battle bus just keeps on going. I know old skool Saab owners deride these newer 9-5s as a dressed up Vauxhall but...

189,000 miles, annual MOT, straight through no issues. We have just paid out to have the breather system replaced, and the sump cleaned out, but, the engine itself and the turbo are still spanking fresh and there's not a rattle or other noise from the insides. At all.

Last week my wife ran into a one foot deep pothole, shredding both tyres on one side, but despite the horrendous shock the suspension survived just fine.

And it still goes like stink, although it does like the petrol juice at distressingly regular intervals.

I know Rob likes his Audi as a fast load lugger but I'd go with one of these any day.

The electrics are crap though.

Picked this up about a month ago. As a person who can only own one ride at a time, this is a great Swiss Army Knife of vehicles. It has the fuel economy of many 4 cylinders, goes 0-60 in 6.7 seconds, and is invisible to police. Also, great in the snow, which really comes in handy here in the snow belt.
