Drove a new Cayman S yesterday and I wonder what Porsche is doing. It's a much better chassis than the Carrera now, only underpowered with a somewhat chintzy interior. Equip it like the 911 and it would crush it like a bug (pun intended).

Or are you wondering why they didn't start out on the flagship with this new tech, rather than the low end?

There's no real B pillar on the Carrera. Not really new tech. They won't up the power/trim of the Cayman though it's supposed to be the budget 911.

They are, slowly, over the last 3 generations of the 911 they've brought the engine forward 12 cms relative to the rear axle. That doesn't sound like a lot, but it's a big difference in terms of unsprung weight, aka. the amount of weight outside the wheel "box", making the chassis more balanced. Back in the air-cooled era, if you took too many liberties with one you'd end up facing the other way in a ditch, actually that's not too far from the truth all the way up to the 997, under certain conditions.

The Cayman started life as a mid-engined car, whereas the 911 is rear-engined. Making the 911 a balanced and neutral car takes some engineering witchcraft, whereas the Cayman has been neutral from the get-go. It's interesting to me how much money and time Porsche pours into the 911 to allow it do what it shouldn't be able to do. It's the ultimate case of automotive design obstinance, to be frank about it. They're wicked fun to drive, though, and I guess that's the #1 reason for buying one, and always has been.

Interesting - I've never heard "unsprung weight" defined that way. What's the precedent for that? All of my suspension design textbooks refer to it as the weight not supported by the suspension - wheels, tires, brakes, and part of the suspension components, struts, springs, axles. I've never heard it used to refer to weight forward or rearward of the wheels.

Got my terms jumbled, anyhow, excessive weight outside the axles is generally a bad thing.

My point was, I don't think they did intend it to be a budget 911, but I do agree that it won't surpass the 911's trim level (or power). IMO, they use it as a test bed to try out ideas for the next 911s. A guy at my "home track" has a turbo Cayman, previous gen, w/ ~450hp and it's a stunning car. I've had a Carrera GT for going on 6 months now and they're surprisingly similar in chassis balance and feel. I need to get my hands on a Ruf CTR3 and try it out.
