So back in the day I bought Apple's firewire iSight camera for use my with old PowerBook. It now sits in it's original plastic tube-case in a box. This thing, like many Apple products, still looks great, but is there anything I can use it for.

A couple of years ago I played with it on my iMac as a second camera, but since my iMac has one built in I don't need it and it doesn't make any sense. I mean my iPhone and iPad have cameras. For it's intended use it's, well, useless.

I've thought about how it would be great if I could use it as a security camera, I had once used EvoCam with it long ago and the software had some useful application, but it required it to be hooked up to a mac. So short of getting an old mac and long FW cable, does anyone know of some way to use this, such as a router with a FW port (personally I've never heard of such a thing) or some other clever rig? Other suggested uses?

You could pick up an old PPC laptop for next to nothing. Like a clamshell iBook. Tuck it out of the way, turn screen off, let it stream the video to where you want over the network.

If you did this, avoid the first clamshell iBook (no FW port) and you'd need streaming software that works under Tiger for the early ones. The iBook G4s can take Leopard.

At one point people where selling them on eBay for more than twice their purchase price. I suspect that is no longer true. I put it on display in a museum of small Apple devices, that I own.

You could theoretically use it on any computer (not just a Mac) with firewire as a camera - it should show up in Windows or Linux as a plug-and-play camera, I'd think.

You won't be able to use it as a networked camera; it needs to be hooked up to a computer. Why not just get a really long FW cable and use it as a security camera with one of your Intel Macs?
