Does anyone know? Not just Halo in particular—though I am most interested in it—but any games, really.

It doesn't run well on my 2 GHz iMac G5 with 2 GB of memory. I hope a universal binary is released for Halo and a few more of the other popular games, but won't hold my breath.

Really? It smokes on my 1.8GH G5 tower with 768MB RAM. However, I do have the Radeon 9600 XT with 128 MB VRAM.

I thought applications running in Rosetta can't access the video card. I don't think Rosetta was written with games in mind.

It can access the video card and it does. Tons of people have reported being able to play WoW and Unreal Tourney 2k4 on their iMac Core Duos. A few have said Halo runs fine. I'm always skeptical when it comes to believing someone that does have some hard FPS numbers but I'm sure most games are 'playable'...of course, playing online with against others would probably not be recommended until a native version of the game is released.

Update! I e-mailed MacSoft tech support and got this friendly reply:
Hi Josh,
We're working on a Halo UB right now. No release date has been announced. But it will take a while as there is a lot involved in re-porting the game. My guess would be about 8 weeks.
Thanks,
Greg Grimes

I asked Macsoft technical support if they could post Universal Halo updates on their website, and if they had an update.
Their reply:
I'll see what we can do. So that you know, I don't know currently where we're at with the Halo UB.
Ho hum.

Well its good to know that Halo ain't dead.
I wonder if they might slip in support for CE while they are at it

Halo runs ok under Rosetta on a iMac Duo 17" - a little faster than my 1.25 Powerbook
Most games seem to be working ok - would prefer UB as I would expect they would be a lot faster than my PB

Ah well. Hopefully sometime this year. That's how I'm taking "about eight weeks." It would be nice to rock out some UB Halo.

At the risk of causing a flame war.........I just installed the Windows version of Halo on my 17" MacBook Pro. 1680x1050 all options set to max. Its amazing. There are even a few graphic effects that the Windows version got under DX that we missed out on in the OpenGL version.
So no need to wait for a UB patch for my Mac version anymore
I'm now replaying the game on Legendary difficulty. Woot!

That is suprising, seeing as Microsoft is taking forever to get universal Office out ( but it's on its way )

Microsoft has gone on the record saying that they will NOT be patching Microsoft Office 2004. The next version will, of course, be universal.

I saw Halo for Mac the other day at Voelker Research, but it sure didn't have the unversal symbol on it. But who knows, sometimes they take forever to get rid of stuff.

You're not going to find the Unniversal Binary of Halo in a retail store! It'll be an update.
The retail copies were/are thePowerPC version.

No word on Halo2. We are working on a UB for Halo though. I don't have an estimated release date.
Thanks,

Looks like there isn't a real update according to this:

Well, at least it's out now. Damn me and my not-saved receipt!
Now we just wait for reports on the quality of the port...

I'm downloading it now. I'll try it on my Powerbook and my Macbook Pro.
Really wished I could have both done an online download and gotten a cd for $10.

Downloaded but can't get it to run. Says it needs my original cd, which I have in the drive. MBP 2.16.
Edit: Read on Inside Mac Games that apparently I have to burn the new image. Macsoft should make this clearer. Halo requested my original cd.

Performance is ok. Choppy during the introduction, especially when showing the back of the autumn. MBP 2.16, 1 gig of RAM, Advanced Pixel Shaders, Detail Objects, 4x Sampling, Medium Lens Flare, High Model Detail, 1440x900. Multiplayer was fine.
Performance could be better for this system.
Edit: Slightly better with 4x Anti-Aliasing off. Here is the bench:

8 weeks became 6 months but that's okay. I think more developers with existing mac games should do this. I am tempted to pick it up now.

To be determined later.

"The full download is 650 MB."
"Halo for Macintosh, originally released in 2003, is an extensive rewrite of the original Halo code, according to the company."
So much for just ticking a few checkboxes in X-code. Which is why I'll wait 'til more apps are UB before I plunge back into Intel world.

See, the problem arises when the program wasn't written in Xcode in the first place, which I'm betting is the case here.
